Are Mike, Joe and John all human, adult and male? Do all the "it"s refer to the same action? Do all the "he"s refer to the man mentioned before? Did they all do/not do it in the order stated (ie Mike didn't do it, then Joe did it, then John did it twice)? If Mike had done it, would he have been lauded? If Joe hadn't, would he have been criticised? If John had done it once, would he still have got in trouble? Criticised? Lauded? If either of the others had done it twice, would they have got in trouble? Was John in trouble with the law? With an authority figure? Did Mike actively choose not to do it? Did he get the opportunity to do it and turned it down? Did it ever occur to him to do it? Could he have physically done it had he wanted to? Is it relevant why he didn't? Is it relevant why John did it twice? Does doing "it" take less than 5 minutes? 5-15? 15-30? 30-an hour? Less than 5 hours? More than a day? Is it a specific action? Does it require specific equipment? Can anyone do it? Men and women? Children? Someone in a wheelchair? Is it done for fun? Out of necessity? Is it illegal? |

If you are allowed to do it and are physically capable of doing so, are you expected to? Legally obliged to? Is whether or not you are allowed to do it determined primarily by where you live? Do different places have different laws on the subject? Does one do the thing alone? With one other person? More? Does doing the action have long-lasting effects? Could John have done something between doing it and doing it for the second time that would have meant he didn't get into trouble? Is it possible to undo it? |

I don't know what happened to the host of this puzzle, but I sent in the correct answer by email a while back. So to keep people from going down the wrong track, I will say that the answer to Damia's question is yes, and that should $poil it. |

Ah. I was thinking it could also apply to enlisting in the army in the 1800s, when you got a bounty for joining up. Some men would enlist, desert, and enlist again repeatedly. |
