Was the subject (let's say, Eugene) doing something that seemed to onlookers that "Maybe he just wanted to eat albatross"? Does the man plan to eat something? Are we harbouring a FA concerning the 'eating' in the puzzle statement? |

No. Are we harbouring a FA concerning the 'eating' in the puzzle statement? He doesn't actually eat an albatross, or anything else, if that's what you mean. But 'eat' is meant in the usual sense. |

Does the person say anything that leads you to say "maybe he just wanted to eat an albatross" Does this have anything to do with a detective? Does this have anything to do with a different spin on the classic albatross tale? Is the person using sign language? |

The Ancient Mariner? Ding-ding-ding! *****SPOILER***** In Samuel Taylor Coleridge's "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," the titular character shoots an albatross that had followed the ship for nine days. Then his shipmates get mad at him, expecting the weather to turn worse, then they support him when it turns better, then they all die when the ship is becalmed, but the Ancient Mariner doesn't die...but that's not the point. The point is, we never learn why he shot the albatross. There's probably a fair amount of literary criticism on this topic, but I thought, "Maybe he just wanted to eat albatross." He never did, though. As an aside, this is a really great poem, and if you want to read it, you can easily find it by googling the title. It is also responsible for the idiom of an albatross as a burden, as the other sailors hang the albatross around the Ancient Mariner's neck when they are becalmed, as well as the phrase "Water, water, everywhere, nor any drop to drink." Now I'll have to think of a new puzzle or two. |
