It's not what you get out of it that matters -- it's what you put into it.

Is the scrund regarding:
"what you get out of it"?
"what you put into it"?
the origin of the name of something (i.e. people think it's named for what comes out of it, when in fact it's named for what goes into it)?

what the computer is used for? who uses the computer? when it was in production?

A rare "yes to all these!"

was it made in [LTPF list of decades in 20th/21st century]? 1980s and 1990s.

Was it an Atari?? I LOVED my Atari!

Was it an actual computer in our traditional thinking of a computer (mobo, processor, monitor, keyboard, etc.) or is it a computer in the strictest sense of the word (in that it computes information)?

Was the computer made by Radio Shack? Like the original TRS 80? Or an original Apple computer? Something unusual? Like the Osborne? Or some computer that was popular? Is the company that made it still in existence?
Was the computer desktop sized? Or handheld?

Referring to what you put in - is it a floppy disk?

I motion to add Atari to that list. And space invaders as it's own category...but I'm content with just Atari for now I guess.

Does this scrund deal with a particular game? If so {LTPF List of NES Games}? With the controllers? With operating the system? With marketing? With when it came out? With its development?

As for "what you get out of it", does this refer to removing something physical (e.g. dust)? something abstract (e.g. the data stored on the cartridge)? same for "what you put into it"?

Are dust and/or dead cells relevant to this puzzle at all?

Did you think that getting dust out of the cartridge mattered? Does putting dust into the cartridge matter?

Did you think that getting dust out of the cartridge mattered? Yes... Does putting dust into the cartridge matter? ...but no.

Hmmm... Is the discouraged practice of blowing onto the carts relevant? Perhaps you thought that by blowing, you would be able to remove the dust from the cart and allow it to "work", only to later realize that the NES wouldn't work because of flaws in the hardware design and that by blowing on the cart you were simply exacerbating the problem by increasing the amount of moisture, thereby accelerating the rate at which the NES's slot connector, which was already highly prone to the process, corroded? (Wow, that was actually kinda long...)

This is most of it...close enough for a...

*****SPOILER*****

Many (most?) people who grew up playing the NES will remember blowing on cartridges to "get the dust out" and get them to work instead of displaying a blue screen or something. What was actually going on here was that the pins in the 72-pin connector which established a connection between the game and the system tended to get bent back over time, so that the connection wouldn't happen or would happen sporadically. What blowing actually did was put moisture, from the breath, on the connectors, making a connection more likely, if still prone to failing at the most critical moment of a game. So it's not the dust (what you get out of the cartridge by blowing on it) that matters -- it's the moisture (what you put into the cartridge by blowing on it.) Indeed, blowing would cause the connectors to corrode over time.

This puzzle was inspired by "Eazy One #2," which was about the practice of blowing on the cartridges. The explanation for it displayed this misconception, and I was about to correct it, but then decided to make a puzzle out of it instead. Thanks to everyone for your questions, and in particular to Doctapeppa for finishing it off.

The best way by far to get a troublesome NES to work, though, is to repair or replace the 72-pin connector -- googling for "72-pin connector" gives all the information you need.

Interesting. I also heard something about somebody or other releasing some rights of the ROMs for NES games to allow people who own a NES cart of a game to transfer the game onto a computer and use an emulator. I'm not sure where I read that though...

But is it really the same as playing with the old black rectangular controllers? (Full disclosure; I sent my NES to be refurbished at some point and they replaced those with more rounded ones. I have another NES, so I should have a pair of the black ones...somewhere.)
