Naming them for cartoon characters is one thing, but "Snowcone" and "Haystack" just wouldn't be appropriate! (possibly a quickie.) |

Are they animals? No. Animals associated with majesty and pride? No. The title is mildly relevant, but you don't need to find its relevance to solve this puzzle. |

Is "Haystack" inappropriate because you would want to put (or find? or use?) a needle in it? |

Possible FA there, in fact; the medical purpose exists, but is secondary. It can safely be ignored for purposes of solving the puzzle. |

Do extreme temperatures (hot and cold) have any relevance to the chosen names? Probably not; irrelevant. Is the puzzle statement sarcastic? Not intentionally. But now that I think of it, the names actually chosen are majestic enough to be proud of, and Snowcone and Haystack definitely aren't. |

So this is to do with names of space shuttles? And the names Snowcone and Haystack were proposed, which would hardly be appropriate (like naming a racehorse of high breeding "Black Beauty")? |

Snowcone and Haystack were the "original" names of Eagle and Columbia, the modules of Apollo 11 that first put a man on the moon. I suppose saying "The Snowcone has landed" would sound a trifle ridiculous, but I am not sure whether this is helpful in terms of solving the puzzle. I offer it here in case it may assist a keener mind than mine. |

I suppose saying "The Snowcone has landed" would sound a trifle ridiculous, but I am not sure whether this is helpful in terms of solving the puzzle. I offer it here in case it may assist a keener mind than mine. No point in a spoiler; that's the answer. On Apollo 9, the command module Gumdrop and lunar module Spider were named for what they physically resembled. On Apollo 10, the LM was named Snoopy because it "snooped" around Apollo 11's landing site, and the CM was named Charlie Brown to match. After that, the government cracked down and insisted on patriotic and literary names. During the initial planning stage, Snowcone and Haystack were used as placeholder names but were hastily changed when the rule came down. The title is drawn from a Civil War song: "The eagle of Columbia, in majesty and pride, Still soars aloft in glory, though traitors have defied The flag we dearly cherish, the emblem of our will, Baptized in blood of heroes, way down on Bunker Hill." |
