Sam = H? A? M? How many other relevant people are involved? 1? 2? 3? ...? Did Sam say something that made him/her appear racist? Not say something? Do something? Not do something? Did Sam refuse to say? not say? do? not do? something that he/she considered sexist? Would said thing be considered inherently sexist? Or just in that situation? Or just to Sam and not to anyone else? |

Was Sam halfway thru a statement when he realized it would be sexist? Did he then change the rest of his statement to avoid it but ended up sounding racist instead? |

Was he going to say something like "I just hate girls like that," referring to some characteristic, and caught himself on appearing to be sexist, so he said "I just hate people like that," in a way that seemed to be referring to the object of his statement's race? |

By saying its not a situation, I mean there is no need for another party to be present for this terminology to make Sam appear to be racist - I hope that is not confusing. It doesn't matter whether he is in the presence of a white a person, alone in his bedroom, in a group of anti-white people, etc Recap: Sam felt that a certain term was sexist, and so he decided against using it. But the term Sam choose instead, could just as easily be considered a racist term. The question is why. |

Is gender-neutral language relevant? (e.g., using the term "law enforcement officer" as opposed to "policeman" or "letter carrier" instead of "mailman") Could the sexist term be interpreted as implying the superiority of the female sex? or the male sex? Or implying the inferiority of the male sex? Or the female sex? Could the racist term be interpreted as implying the inferiority of the Caucasian race to another specific race? Or as inferior to all other races? |

Is gender-neutral language relevant? no ould the sexist term be interpreted as implying the superiority of the female sex? or the male sex? Or implying the inferiority of the male sex? Or the female sex? I don't believe that inferiority/superiority of the sexes are the correct way to describe this. The term is derogtaroy to a certain group of women. Could the racist term be interpreted as implying the inferiority of the Caucasian race to another specific race? Or as inferior to all other races? Same concept as above, the term is derogatory to caucasions (or could be, it is more obvious in the first scenario than when it becomes racist) Hint: Focus on finding out what the object was |

So was the sexist thing he didn't say calling it a "wife beater"? Or is this the 'racist' thing he did say? Did the thing that he said that made him appear racist have to do with the same type of shirt? Did he simply call it by another name? that could have been taken in a racist way? |

Was the word he used a conventional term for a sleeveless shirt? Or was it simply a rough replacement for the words "wife" and "beater" that ended up sounding racist? Would the shirt have to be white for this to work? |

Was the word he used a conventional term for a sleeveless shirt? what do you mean by "conventional?" I will tell you that I came up with the idea for this puzzle after seeing this term on someone's packing list, and a google search reveals many results for the term. I would still consider it slang though Would the shirt have to be white for this to work? In the case of the criteria previously defined during this puzzle, yes, But if going solely by the original puzzle statement, no Did he call it a "slave beater"? no |

Did he simply call it a "beater"? Something with the word "beater" in it? Did he call it a "white beater" intending to mean a [wife] beater that was white but it could also refer to a violent white dude or a white dude that is beaten? |

****Spoiler**** Yes he called it a white beater. The slang term "wife beater" originated in the early 90s with the show cops - when they went on domestic dispute calls the man involved would almost always come out wearing a white undershirt, so the shirt took on the name "wife beater." Recently I saw someone's packing list and they had written that they need to pack "white beaters." Changing the term from its sexist connotation (beating your wife) to a racist one (beating whites). Google reveals that its becoming more common to now call these white beaters and black beaters (when black). But I doubt you'll see them called Asian or Hispanic beaters, so this puzzle wouldn't work with all races. |
