A man and a woman were the same age, born of the same parents. When they were asked if they were twins, they replied, "no." How is this possible? Maybe this one will be quick. |

Same age to the day? Or merely to the year? If the latter, then one was born very early in the year and the other was born 9-11 months later. If to the day (or otherwise too close to be explained by the above idea): did the mother have two uteruses? Did she have a normal uterus, but managed to become pregnant twice? |

Er, by that last sentence, I of course mean "did she manage to become pregnant for a second time while still carrying the first pregnancy?" |

If you don't mind, I'll take over the puzzle, add the statement that they were born on the same date, and that there was nothing special about their mother's physionogmy. |

Can you be sure that no other mods will come a-prowling and whip the thread into the Recently Solveds? :-) Are they part of triplets/quads/however many? Is the word 'twin' being used in the normal sense? (i.e. "two offspring resulting from the same pregnancy, usually born in close succession", as Wikipedia puts it.) As well as being born on the same date, were they also born in the same year? (e.g. both on March 23rd, 1975) Although there's nothing special about the mother's physiognomy, was there something special about the pregnancy? About the man? woman? Is it at all relevant that they're of different genders? Were there any sperm donations involved? Surrogate pregnancies? We can differentiate between 'social' and 'biological' parents, i.e. if someone donates sperm (or dies before the birth, or leaves the mother before birth, etc.) they will always be the biological parent, even if they play no part in the raising of the child. To be a social parent, one would need to play an active role in the child's upbringing - thus, we could call a grandfather a 'social parent' if he helps a single mother to raise his grandson/her son. ...Are both of the two parents of whom we're talking, the biological parents of the man and woman? The social parents? Is there an important difference between the man and the woman in this respect? |

I'm confused now. Was a post deleted from this that had the answer? And if so are we now looking for a different answer? |

they are not twins because they were conceived at different points in pregnancy? Is that possible in humans? |

So it's clear: Abc will be taking questions for this puzzle with the following modified statement: A man and a woman were born on the same date, of the same parents. There was nothing special about their mother's physiognomy. When asked if they were twins, they replied, "No." How is this possible? |

Are they part of triplets/quads/however many? Yes. Puzzle solved. Again. (: Since the puzzle does not state that they are not twins, but merely that they answer "no" when asked if this is the case, another valid solution to the puzzle is that they are lying. |

They would still be triplets if the third had died during birth, so you could also add that if you included their parents they were a family of four |

Or make them dogs instead of humans. Then they're technically a litter, not twins. |

(Of course, you'd have to reword the puzzle. It's kind of hard to get a pair of pups to respond to your questions.) |
