Americans & maybe some others will know that President Obama has nominated Judge Sonia Sotomayor, to the Supreme Court. She comes from a poor Peurto Rican family, graduated from Princeton (top honors) & Yale Law School, & is rather liberal. But there's one thing that almost everyone says about her that is wrong, not because people are misinformed but because they are misinterpreting something. This is a bi-partisan puzzle. You don't have to be a (knee-jerk?) liberal & Sotomayor enthusiast like me to agree with the solution. How come? |

do we need to know anything about US politics or the Supreme Court to do this? (All I know is what I've seen on West Wing!) are people mispronouncing her name? does the wrong thing relate to her age? her appearance? her race? her family? her education? her hobbies? her previous employment? her title? her romatic relationships? her politics? her views? her previous rulings? her preferences? |

So this is a scrund? Do they assume she is of different descent than Puerto Rican? If she was Cuban, would the scrund apply? If she was Mexican? Does it have to do with her childhood? Her religion? Where she lives, or has lived? Does the scrund apply to not just her, but an entire group of which she is a part (to her family, for example)? |

I defined a scrund as a false belief that persists because the subject never comes up for correction. Scrunds, once exposed, are not controversial or a matter of viewpoint. The false belief in this puzzle is partly a matter of viewpoint (but not political viewpoint). Still, once I suggest that there's a misconception, people generally agree with me. So maybe it is a scrund. Do they assume she is of different descent than Puerto Rican? no If she was Cuban, would the scrund apply?Yes, if everything else about her was unchanged If she was Mexican? ditto Does it have to do with her childhood? yes Her religion? no Where she lives no, or has lived yes? Does the scrund apply to not just her, but an entire group of which she is a part (to her family, for example)? It almost certainly applies to her brother, but I have no idea whether it applies to her parents. It applies to many other people as well. |

Is the misbeliefe stated in your opening statement? Ie her family may have been poor by American standards, but not by Puerto Rican ones? That she comes from another country because Puerto Rico is not a US state? That people think she is ineligible to be president of the US because of her place of birth, when in reality she is eligible, as anyone born in Puerto Rico after 1917 was born a US citizen? Do they mistakenly consider her an immigrant? |
