Did he need to mark on himself? Someone else? Was he building a snowman? Was the crayon to be used to blacken something to make it look like a piece of coal? Or to blacken something in the same manner that ashes or a piece of coal would be used to blacken something? Black pencil would not have worked, correct? Is the waxiness of the crayon relevant? So this person was outside, then? Gender relevant? Could Jane see him/her whe she opened the door? Was he/she standing next to Bill? Would the crayon be used to mark on his/her skin? nails? hair? face? hands? feet? clothes? Is it relevant what the person was wearing (or wasn't wearing)? Is the relevance of crayon or ashes, as opposed to pencil, just the relative marking ability? As in, pencil wouldn't show up on whatever he's drawing on? Or is there some other relevant application of the crayon's waxiness? Would he grind up the crayon or otherwise alter it before using it? |

Alright, so with your permission, the third person will be Bill's friend Sam. Is Sam's occupation relevant? Relevant why Bill and Sam were in that neighborhood? Did one or both live there? Was there some kind of event going on? Was Bill a face painter? And he ran out of black paint? Would the crayon be going directly on top of skin? (I ask because I didn't think it was particularly possible to draw on oneself in crayon.) Was there another layer of something else? A mask? Would Bill be marking on Sam's cheek? nose? mouth/lips? chin? ear? forehead? eyebrow? eyelid? eyelash? eye itself (hopefully not)? entire face? Was the purpose of this primarily aesthetic? to symbolize something? war paint? some other practical purpose? |

Ohlala8 (Ohlala8) Alright, so with your permission, the third person will be Bill's friend Sam. Certainly. Is Sam's occupation relevant? No. Relevant why Bill and Sam were in that neighborhood? Yes. Was there another layer of something else? No. A mask? Would Bill be marking on Sam's cheek? nose? mouth/lips? chin? ear? forehead? Was the symbol religious? Tribal? Related to a group or team that Bill and Sam belong to? Related to a tradition of the event that's going on? Are they white? Does it matter? Does Sam submit willingly to the drawing on his forehead? Before knocking on the door, had Bill already started drawing on Sam's forehead? With ashes? charcoal? crayon? something else? This isn't actually an eyeliner crayon or something, is it? Can we assume crayola? Is Sam the only member of the group on whose forehead Bill intended to draw? Is Sam the only one who will be doing the drawing? Has Jane heard of the group they are in? Did she know they had an event in her neighborhood? Does she approve? Is this group recreational? a club of some sort? do they share a common interest? a common belief? could the event proceed if Sam's forehead was unmarked? or was it just a sudden inspiration to mark his forehead? Wait...books + usually goth. Is it a book or books about vampires? If so, Twilight? Interview with the Vampire? Dracula? Buffy the Vampire Slayer (was that ever a book)? Gosh, I can't think of a single Fantasy series off the top of my head where characters wear some kind of symbol on their foreheads. So...continuing the brute force method until someone else steps in... JRR Tolkein? Robert Jordan? Terry Brooks? Ursula LeGuin? Brandon Sanderson? Guy Gavriel Kay? Terry Pratchett? Marion Zimmer Bradley? CS Lewis? Whoever wrote the Golden Compass? Terry Goodkind? George RR Martin? |

Noel Gosh, I can't think of a single Fantasy series off the top of my head where characters wear some kind of symbol on their foreheads. So...continuing the brute force method until someone else steps in... If you've read it, you'll kick yourself. If not, there's no reason you should know. =) Sorry to drag this one out, but I think it's guessable. JRR Tolkein? Robert Jordan? Terry Brooks? Ursula LeGuin? Brandon Sanderson? Guy Gavriel Kay? Terry Pratchett? My favorite author. Marion Zimmer Bradley? CS Lewis? Whoever wrote the Golden Compass? Terry Goodkind? George RR Martin? None of the above. |

A story on NPR last night reminded me that Harry Potter is also considered fantasy. Is it Harry Potter? |

Noel (Noel) A story on NPR last night reminded me that Harry Potter is also considered fantasy. Is it Harry Potter? Yes indeed! Thank you for letting me finally end this one. ******************SPOILER Jane lives just down the block from a book store, so when the new Harry Potter book is about to come out, the line goes right past her house. Just before midnight she gets a knock on her door and the conversation in the puzzle statement ensues. She is talking to Bill, a guy in a group of guys standing in line, and she sees that all of them have Harry Potter lightning-bolt scars smeared onto their foreheads except one, Sam. She correctly deduces that Bill wants ashes or charcoal to draw on Sam's forehead, so instead she offers a Body Crayon, designed for drawng on one's skin. |

Haha, I can see how "fantasy" might lead you down the wrong track, though. |
