The umbrella being open probably saved his life. Hi, I'm new to the forum, so if I do something wrong, shout at me until I cease and desist. :D |

Was he holding the umbrella? Was the umbrella used as a parachute(I've tried this it doesn't work)? Did it block something? Did it prevent someone from seeing him? Some type of poisonous substance being kept off him by the umbrella? Could this happen in the USA today? Are there any other relevant people? |

Joe - Welcome to the forum! We won't yell too loud (especially since some of us are technically at work ;-] ). And hey, you put your name in the title of the puzzle, so you've already got one point. Only 99,999 more and you too can own this very stylish, (*cough*) "brand new," "WWID" (What Would I Do) rubber band bracelet, perfect for all your moments of indecision or identity crisis, painstakingly "etched" with black Sharpie. Oh that? Don't mind the chew marks - my cat thought it was hers... :-D John - "Was the umbrella used as a parachute(I've tried this it doesn't work)?"... that sounds interesting... any intriguing story behind that? Is the umbrella the normal kind (i.e. the one that people generally open to block rain)? the kind used in photography? the little one they put in fruity alcoholic drinks? Umbrella Corp? Did he open the umbrella? or did someone else? Was he outside when the relevant actions took place? If he was holding the umbrella, was it pointed in a more vertical direction? horizontalle? Was he in the umbrella (e.g. standing/sitting in it as it floated)? Is he human? adult? male? Are there any other people relevant to the story? If so, 1? 2? 3? ... all people everywhere since the dawn of time? |

You said "yes" to "was he in the umbrella." By "in the umbrella," do you mean... He was under the umbrella in the normal way (with it open above him)? He was inside of an umbrella when it was folded up? He was inside of an upside down umbrella that was open? Other? Is it the kind of umbrella that sits above a patio table? Or a lifeguard chair? Is it a beach umbrella? Was anyone holding the umbrella? Was it freestanding? Held up by another inanimate object? Was it mobile? or stationary? |

Was it on a table? a chair? a piece of furniture of any kind? a hat? When he was in the umbrella, was it (and he) supported by air? water? grass? earth? concrete? furniture? rock? was he on solid ground? Was he standing? sitting? lying down? curled up? unconscious? Did he fall in such a way that the umbrella hit the table before him? and therefore he fell into it? Could you rephrase this? Did he fall at all? Yes, albeit a very short distance. (hoping you're from America and use feet) No. D: Is the umbrella about a 1 foot diameter? 2 feet? 3? 4? 5? 6? 7? This, maybe. 8? 9? 10? more? When he was in the umbrella, was he on top of the table? Was he knocked unconscious by a blow to the head? A man is indoors, in a place similar to a restaurant that is sort of public. He is standing under a large patio-style umbrella. It is open and supported by a table. Another man punches him and he falls over, as does the umbrella. He lands inside of the umbrella (it is open beneath him). He is unconscious. The umbrella is hanging from something, and it is also supported by water in a way. In some way, his life is saved because the umbrella is open beneath him. All correct so far? If not, which parts are incorrect? "supported by water in a way" --> is he on a boat? A cruise ship? At an indoor pool? using a hot tub? on an ice rink or other frozen surface? Do we need to figure out why he was punched? yopishly a restaurant and a public place --> A wedding reception hall? A bar? A hotel lounge? A kitchen? Some event that is open to everyone who buys a ticket (so it is public but also has restricted access)? |

Was he punched because: He wasn't supposed to be on the cruise ship? He was a stowaway? He insulted the person who punched him (let's call the person who punched him Fred, ok?) ? He insulted a friend or companion of Fred? He hit on (made a pass at) Fred's significant other? He cheated on Fred with Fred's significant other? He stole something from Fred? He did something else illegal that affected Fred? He won a bunch of money from Fred in a hand of Poker? Some other game? Is Fred a staff member of the cruise ship? Another passenger? Ok, so the punching did not cause him to fall into the umbrella, right? Did it happen before or after he fell into the umbrella? Is the umbrella hanging over the edge of the boat? |

Ok, how does this sounds: A man (let's call him Jeff) did something illegal that involved to another man, Fred. Fred was a staff member on a cruise ship. Because of this illegal action, Fred punched Jeff, and Jeff was knocked unconscious. Jeff was either placed or left underneath a patio-style umbrella on the ship, still unconscious. During a turbulent storm, the umbrella fell over, and Jeff ended up inside of the umbrella, still unconscious. The umbrella is hanging from something. In some way, his life is saved because he fell into the open umbrella. Correct so far? If no, which parts are right? Does it matter whether Jeff was left under the umbrella after being punched or Fred purposely placed Jeff there? If so, which was it? What's left to find out: what the illegal action was? How being in an umbrella saved Jeff's life? Anything else? |

Because of this illegal action, Fred punched Jeff, and Jeff was knocked unconscious. Yes. Jeff was either placed or left underneath a patio-style umbrella on the ship, still unconscious. Yes. During a turbulent storm, the umbrella fell over, and Jeff ended up inside of the umbrella, still unconscious. No, something here isn't correct. The umbrella is hanging from something. Yes. In some way, his life is saved because he fell into the open umbrella. Yes. Correct so far? If no, which parts are right? Does it matter whether Jeff was left under the umbrella after being punched or Fred purposely placed Jeff there? Yes, Fred put him there deliberately. If so, which was it? What's left to find out: what the illegal action was? It's unimportant, but you could try to guess it if you'd like. How being in an umbrella saved Jeff's life. Yes. Anything else? Yes. Does the umbrella keep Jeff from being swept overboard in the storm? No. |

So there's a storm, and the boat wrecks, and the umbrella (and everything else on the boat) gets turned upside down. But because the umbrella's open (and presumably bolted to the deck of the boat?), he ends up inside the umbrella instead of wherever he would have otherwise been dumped. All correct? Anything else missing? |

One more thing: why is it that he falls into the umbrella? If he was simply slumped over the table, then the gradual tilting of the boat would have made him fall to his death. There's one small detail that's missing. |

Is he also tethered to the boat? Perhaps handcuffed Yes, you've pretty much got it. or chained? A man was on a cruise liner and comitted a crime (pickpocketing, not that that's important) in the restaurant area. He was caught by a member of staff, who tried to stop the man. The two fought, and the thief was knocked out by the employee. The employee placed him on a nearby table. Then, the boat sailed into some very rough seas, and began to invert. The employee, knowing the thief would die if he did not do something, handcuffed him to the umbrella on the table, and then went to brace himself elsewhere. As the boat overturned, the man remained stuck on the umbrella. If it had been closed, the handcuff would have slipped off the end and he would have fallen to his death, but since it was open, he simply fell inside. Rescue teams entered the boat and freed the man, then took him to safety. Well, that's that over, then. Well done, Noel - you seemed to do most of the work here! :D |
