They didn't want to be killed, so they exposed themselves and their comrades to great danger. Why?

Would you classify what they did daring? Foolish?

Were they in a desperate situation and thought it required desperate measures?

Were they in danger of being killed by:

- being shot
- being bombed
- falling from a considerable height
- being drowned
- being burned to death
otherwise?

Did they need weapons to do their daring deed?

Actually, in retrospect, they could have been bombed as well.

Did they attempt to receive a "just-bad-enough" wound that would send them home, but not bad enough to kill them?

Were they among their own troops? Enemies?

It happened in wartime, right?

"They did not want to be killed"? was the risk coming from the enemy? Their own people? Can we call it "Risk 1" for clarity purposes?

"exposed to great danger" - from the enemy? Their own people? Can we call it "Risk 2?"

We have established that they were at risk of being shot (possibly bombed) - does this refer to Risk 1? Risk 2?

On land? this one Sea? Airborne?

Did they attempt to receive a "just-bad-enough" wound that would send them home, but not bad enough to kill them? Yes! This is the answer

**********SPOILER*******

They stuck their fingers out of the trenches, with the hopes that they would get them shot off and would have to be sent home before being killed
