A club?

Do lot of people go there?

Is it a place where you are (usually) supposed to perform some activity? If so, is the activity:
- work?
- sport?
- a hobby (other than a sport)
- drinking?

How on earth can you yopishly drink :-))?

Are the people going to this place strangers to each other?

Does the yopishness of the drink relate to:
- that you do not necessarily have to drink?
- that the "drink" is not a drink in the proper sense of the word?

- that the "drink" is not a drink in the proper sense of the word? Correct again, depending on what you mean by "proper" 8-]

Wouldn't be politically correct if I say booze, would it?

Is the "drink" something liquid you can swallow but serves a different purpose than quench your thirst and/or get plastered?

I am a bit confused - does the drink serve to quench thirst? Or a different purpose?

Do your thoughts in the puzzle statement indicate that the place looks like there IS a party? or rather as if there WAS a party?

I am a bit confused - does the drink serve to quench thirst? Yes. but it is not the primary reason for being there; in fact most people wouldn't bother. I thought a straight up "no" would have been misleading. Or a different purpose? No

**************CLARIFICATION****************
Per Alhucema's understandable confusion, the "there was a party" phrase in the puzzle statement was meant to be past tense. I suppose it could be taken as a continuous party, but that's not how it was meant. Perhaps "there had been" would have been better wording...

So, you arrive at a place you go to quite often.
It has always seemed to you that the place looked like there had been a party, but you never realised why; this time, you experience a sudden flash of enlightenment, and you just know.

So far so good?

So far so good? Yes. Good summation. And by the way, nothing in particular happened differently during that visit to cause the "flash", I just suddenly figured it out.

The people meeting at the place: are they adult? Approximately of the same age? Profession? Sharing a hobby?

The "leftovers", if I can call them that, are mostly of one kind of material?

If so, is it paper? Metal? Tissue? Wood? Plastic? Food? Liquid?

Are they mostly on the floor? Table(s)? Furniture?

Profession - do we both mean something you have to qualify for? and earn money with?

The tissue - is it natural? Man-made? Mixture of both?

Is it clean? or dirty?

Are there several pieces of the tissue? If so, are they similar in size? If so again, larger than a handkerchief?

Was the tissue previously used for something? No, for the specific pieces in question. I will use that same narrow definition for the next three questions. Is it meant to be left there? yope or removed? Thrown away? those 2 will likely happen eventually

Is it the tissue that reminds you of a party? Not the tissue in and of itself

There's not as much of a "mess" as you're suggesting. There IS toilet paper, not in it's usual place, and as such it is suggestive of a party having been there..

If so, is it to mend something? Replace something? Provide paper to a neighbour who has run out of it?

Was the paper put wherever it is for a serious purpose (ie not just for fun)? Yes

If so, is it to mend something? Replace something? Provide paper to a neighbour who has run out of it? No to all. But very thoughtful.

Keyholes?

Cover as to impair visibility? Increase the comfort of the, ehem, users?

Does the paper remain there for minutes? Hours? Days?

Cover the holes above/below the partitions?

Or no partitions are involved? Would it work in girl's room as well?

Cover something between the toilets? Or between a toilet and a "common space"

Is the area to be covered below waist? Above?

Is it larger than a postcard? A4 sheet?

Is there only one such area?

Is the area to be covered close to the toilet door?

Is there something unusual about the toilet? Does the door/partition go down to the floor/up to the ceiling, or is there a hole in between?

Does the door cover the person inside from the ankles up?

Is the area to be covered close to the toilet door? most definitely

Is there something unusual about the toilet? the toilet itself, no. the bathroom as a whole, and the "toilet doors" in particular, yes

Does the door/partition go down to the floor/up to the ceiling, or is there a hole in between The whole door/partition does not extend to the floor or ceiling, but again, that aspect is not of concern; I'm not sure I know what you meant by "hole in between", but it could be crucial.

Does the door cover the person inside from the ankles up? Not quite

You're very close to finishing, I was tempted to spoil it here, but there's a little more to find out

Hang on... is the door transparent? Translucent? Glass, perhaps? And your silhouette can be seen through it?

Do you guys hang the paper on the door to cover this?

Do you mean the gap down the sides of the door? Both down the hinge side and the locking side (I've always found American toilet doors to barely hide anything, although the largest gaps top and bottom were in Hong Kong - I have an idea for a new book and have lots more incidents I can tell....)

*****************SPOILER************************

Alhucema, you've been hammering away at this one for awhile, and you were like 90% there (and I'm sure you would've "closed the gap").

Lynne, you nailed it.

In the men's room in the office building where I work, I've noticed that most days there are lengths of toilet paper hanging like, well, party streamers (crepe paper) from the corners of some of the stalls. I always found it odd (thought maybe it was a joke at first).

Not to get too personal or digusting, but at some point during a... fairly long visit (which I don't often do, at work), I noticed just how large the gaps are on both sides of the stall door. Nearly an inch! Then I realized THAT was why people were hanging streamers of T.P. in those spots - to try to block off those gaps. It was actually fairly effective. Although I can't bring myself to actually do it, if it's not there already.

Thanks for sticking with it, Alhucema, and Lynne, congrats for filling in the final piece. Hope you enjoyed it.

Thank you for the puzzle, Dropofahat, I was having genuine fun from the beginning till the end. I just did not have this spark of genius Lynne did :-)) I had some work with a deadline to meet and I almost failed because I found it so much more fun to stick with your puzzle :-))

Btw, Lynne, if you want another horrific example for your book - I once visited a kindergarten in Germany, which had a toilet with no door at all and moreover, one of its walls was a window facing another window leading to the kitchen. A real nightmare.

Oh, my horror started when I was at my Dad's office Christmas party for children when I was about five. There weren't enough cubicles to go round so we had to use buckets. And the two lady leaders stood in front of them as if they could block off the view from the other kids! I'm sure that's why I have recurring dreams about using the toilet in public. Yet when we used the ones in Hong Kong I was just 'put your head down and carry on - everyone's in the same boat' and it didn't bother me as much as it could have.

Toilet doors in the UK are much more discreet, but if you get trapped in one like my daughter did at the visitors' centre on White Mountain NY, you wouldn't just be able to crawl out underneath.

Actually, Lynne, I have the same nightmare :-))

However, completely lockable toilets with no open spaces can be dangerous as well - I locked myself once in one of these in Spain and nearly missed my bus, which would have supposed walking for several hours in the middle of nowhere :-))

Actually, I doubt if anybody bigger than my then skinny 12 year old could crawl out. I've known people to complain about inward opening doors on toilets, so no amount of gaps would help them!

We do have small gaps on most of our doors, enough to see if someone has collapsed.

Anyway, sorry to steal you thunder on this one ;-) and I was just kidding about the book :-)

Geniuses don't need to apologize ;-)) In fact, you've saved me - I thought I'd already got it, and I would have been stuck for long if Dropofahat told me I was wrong again, and would perhaps have missed my deadline :-))

And as for the book, it's a good idea, I will perhaps write one myself :-))

TP streamers = toilet paper hanging like a "party streamer" (crepe paper)
