There is a certain action that each and every general in America's history has been able to take. Except for one. What couldn't he do, and why? |

Did they all take this action, or was it an option for them? I'm really interested to find out as my SIL's late father was a general |

Anything to do with having their portrait taken? We saw Andy's portrait in - I think - an Armory back in the 1970s but I can't remember whether it was a painting or a photograph. |

Is a privilege involved? Like eating at a certain place? Being invited to the White House? Getting the freedom of a city? |

Does the privilage involve something they can do? Something they can claim (financially)? Something they can call themselves? Something which exempts them from something? |

Did the general who was unable to be offered this privilege - did he die too early? Was he dishonorably discharged? Was he homosexual and this was held against him? Did they find that he wasn't in fact American at all and had deceived them? |

Was there any prejudice against the general who wasn't offered the privilege? Was he only filling in as a general and didn't oficially get promoted to that rank? Do they get this privilege on being promoted, or do they have to do a minimum length of service at that rank? Can they take advantage of this privilege at all times of the year or is it seasonal? Is it something tangible? Do their families benefit directly from it? |

Voting? Yes. Is voting relevant? (I can't imagine a general being too young to vote, but...) Start imagining. ****************** Spoiler ****************** Galusha Pennypacker was born in June, 1844. He became a Major in an Illinois regiment at age 17, and was aged just twenty when he was promoted to Brigadier General in January, 1865 -- too young to have voted for the President who granted him his commission. |
