Was the breakthrough bamboo? Is some person involved? HAM? HAF? Was it some idea? Invention? Are they putting use to bamboo? Could this be put as "The breakthrough was bamboo"? Was it the bamboo as in the hard wooden stem? Breakthrough as in breaking through something? | ||

I'm assuming you're speaking about modern times here, and not the time in the puzzle. Can you buy it in a shop? Yes. Is the light that it emits used to help you see? (As in a torch) Yes. So is the invention the lightbulb? Bingo! I suspected it'd be a quickie. ***SPOILER*** Thomas Edison tested literally thousands of materials for use as a light bulb filament. What finally turned out to work was a filament of carbonized bamboo, when the technology was perfected the lamps lasted 1500 hours and the era of widespread electrical lighting was born. | ||

So Thomas Edison saw a light bulb and he got an idea to use bamboo in them. Well as the lightbulb wasn't invented by then I'm guessing he saw a lightbulb over his head? Good puzzle! | ||

The other way around - he made yet another experimental light bulb, then stayed up and looked at it - for 40 hours until it burned out. This was when he knew he had got it. Before the breakthrough he had tested everything he could get his hands on, including thousands of different plants sent to him from all over the world. There existed some light bulbs, but they were expensive (some using platinum wire, tungsten could not be worked into a fine enough wire at that time) and had a short lifespan.
