Cities relevant? Borders? Countries? States? Is it relevant where he is? Europe? America? Asia? Africa? Australia? He's in the US, the rest is not that relevant. Is he a student? No. Did he see words/numbers? No. Did he see a tangible object? <b<yes.</b> Did he see a person? Plant? For svv of "plant". Animal? No to the rest. Why is the 19th century relevant? Because of some event? (a war?) Because of a new invention/discovery? This. A new structure? A new rule/law? A new country border? |

svv? What does that mean? Sufficiently vague value - in this case, a very broad definition of "plant". Was the object a tool? Weapon? A piece of writing? A piece of equipment? A device? This is closest. Something electronic? No - but electric. An article of clothing? A piece of furniture? A structure? A model? A material? A specific material is involved. |

A battery? A lock? Legs? Buttons? Switches? Levers? Dials? A lid? A grate? A fan? A motor? None of the above. A device that you can... Lift up? Yes. Buy? Yes. Go inside? Sit on? Push? Flip over? Close? Open? Turn on? This. Spin? Plug in? Yesish.. Carry from place to place? Stand on? All else no or irr. I pictured someone trying to do all of the above though, got some amusing images =) Can it work without human co-operation? Yes. |

I'm assuming you're speaking about modern times here, and not the time in the puzzle. Can you buy it in a shop? Yes. Is the light that it emits used to help you see? (As in a torch) Yes. Or for you to look at? (As in a movie projector) No. Is it used in a house? An office? Indoors? Outdoors? All of the above. Is it used for recreation? No. Is it a common household object? Yes. |

So is the invention the lightbulb? or the thing made out of bamboo? Did the inventor get inspired by bamboo to improve lightbulbs? or by lightbulbs to do something new with bamboo? |

So is the invention the lightbulb? Bingo! I suspected it'd be a quickie. ***SPOILER*** Thomas Edison tested literally thousands of materials for use as a light bulb filament. What finally turned out to work was a filament of carbonized bamboo, when the technology was perfected the lamps lasted 1500 hours and the era of widespread electrical lighting was born. |

So Thomas Edison saw a light bulb and he got an idea to use bamboo in them. Well as the lightbulb wasn't invented by then I'm guessing he saw a lightbulb over his head? Good puzzle! |

The other way around - he made yet another experimental light bulb, then stayed up and looked at it - for 40 hours until it burned out. This was when he knew he had got it. Before the breakthrough he had tested everything he could get his hands on, including thousands of different plants sent to him from all over the world. There existed some light bulbs, but they were expensive (some using platinum wire, tungsten could not be worked into a fine enough wire at that time) and had a short lifespan. Thanks for playing, big gold stars for you both =) Now try and figure out what my firefighters above did so terribly wrong, and I'll try to come up with some new puzzles (: |
