Afterward, he realized that by giving her a ride, he had made his trip completely pointless.

Ride as in: car? train? plane? trolley? bicicle or otherwise pedal powered vehicle? elevator?
Is the trip longer than a day?
Are they both related?
Does the trip have a purpose?
Did "she" ruin the trip? if so , directly/on arrival? or after the ride
is "he and his" referring to first he?
Is this in the current age?
Are they about the same age?

Thanks Gourami.

To make a note bout "ruin", meant that did she make the trip undesireable for the man to have been on.
Or is the man indifferent to the fact it was pointless, but had an intention to do something on that trip? Did the woman do what he intended?
Is the destination relevant?
Is the place she wanted a ride to his intended destitnation?
Is she a hitch hiker?

was the intention: to deliver something? pick something up? go and change/move/otherwise alter something?
did he need a car for the trip, or could he have walked? did he need the car to bring something, or to pick something up?

Was the original point of the trip: to go somewhere? To test some property of the car? To time a trip? Measure a distance?
Do they know each other? Relevant? Relevant who she is?
Was the point lost because: he stopped to pick her up? Drove somewhere else than he would have? Her prescence in the car? That he got her to her destination? If it had been a sack of potatoes instead of a woman, would the trip still had been pointless?

To make a note bout "ruin", meant that did she make the trip undesireable for the man to have been on. Ah, then no.
Or is the man indifferent to the fact it was pointless, Noish. but had an intention to do something on that trip? Yes. Did the woman do what he intended? You mean what she intended? Yes.

Is the destination relevant? Yes.
Is the place she wanted a ride to his intended destitnation? Yes.
Is she a hitch hiker? No or irr.

Yojimbo (Yojimbo)

was the intention: to deliver something? pick something up? go and change/move/otherwise alter something? This is closest.
did he need a car for the trip, or could he have walked? did he need the car to bring something, or to pick something up? Assume he could theoretically walk, but it's a relatively long distance.

Galfisk (Galfisk)

Was the original point of the trip: to go somewhere? This, no to rest. To test some property of the car? To time a trip? Measure a distance?
Do they know each other? Relevant? Relevant who she is? Irr, they could be friends.
Was the point lost because: he stopped to pick her up? Drove somewhere else than he would have? Her prescence in the car? That he got her to her destination? This. If it had been a sack of potatoes instead of a woman, would the trip still had been pointless? No. =)

Did both "he" and "she" have the same intention?
Are occupations relevant?
Do both have the same occupation?
Was there a result anticipated by him that would only occur, if the "point" was carried out/done by him?
Did she sort of steal his thunder?
Did he give her a ride because he pitied her? She needed to get somewhere and asked her a favor? She forced him to?
Would both subjects still be alive in the near future? or the far future? (if dead, as a cause of the situation?)

was he on his way to a venue to meet women?
and met one on the way there (picked her up at a rainy bus stop - it could happen), so his trip was pointless?
and would irony then have her, a splendid woman, getting away from him [at the nightclub], and not leaving behind as much as a glass slipper, or even a cigarette butt with her lipstick on it, not to mention her business card with her phone number?

Was it pointless because when she went with him he understood that he had could have done without the trip?
Was the trip pointless in the meaning that he should had some sort of positive result even she hadn't tagged along, but when she did that result wasn't reached?
...or together with her, the trip was unneeded?
Was he thinking about surprising someone?

Did both "he" and "she" have the same intention? Almost the same.
Are occupations relevant? No.
Do both have the same occupation? Irrel.
Was there a result anticipated by him that would only occur, if the "point" was carried out/done by him? If I follow you right, yes.
Did she sort of steal his thunder? Noish.
Did he give her a ride because he pitied her? Irr. She needed to get somewhere and asked him a favor? Yes. She forced him to? No.
Would both subjects still be alive in the near future? or the far future? (if dead, as a cause of the situation?) Yes, they will never die as a result of this situation.

Is money a factor in the point of his trip?
Did this involve business? a meeting of some sort? a criminal enterprise? charity work? public event? a party? political meeting? medical appointment? something self-related? family? news? other?
Is afterward describing seconds? minutes? hours? days? weeks? years? longer time periods?
Country relevant?

Could he have done something to make the trip have purpose again?
Was he happy to give her a ride? Was she happy to have a ride?
Did he think she would ruin the trip? when he saw her? when she asked for a ride? when she was on the ride?

Rally or demonstration? Did she do something there which made the trip pointless? Or was it the act of getting her there that made it pointless?

Did she do what he was going to do? Something that negated what he was going to do? Did he do what he came to do? If he did, would it have mattered if he didn't?
Was he voting? Did he vote one way and she the other way? And if he hadn't gone, neither of them would've voted so the result would've been the same?

Was the trip of the sort that he went somewhere, performed a quick task, then returned? like buying something? killing someone?
...or did he stay longer than a short moment at his destination? did he know in advance how long time he would stay there?

Was the trip for the specific purpose of doing something that turned out to be related to the woman? Such as meeting her? And yet he had her travelling with him the whole time and thus didn't need the trip (or that specific destination)?

Did she do something that was undesirable to him?

LTPF list of continents. Could this occur in any of a range of countries (such as all "Western" countries)?

Did she do something that was undesirable to him? Most definitely.

Could this occur in any of a range of countries (such as all "Western" countries)? I'm guessing it would work in any country with two major parties and democratic elections. Just replace "Democrat" and "Republican" below with the names of the other parties.

**************SPOILER
It's voting day, and since Katy doesn't have a ride, Joe offers to drive her to the polling place. They go and vote, but on the way back Joe finds out that Katy voted straight-ticket Democrat, while he voted all Republican. Since their district had no third-party candidates, they literally canceled each others' votes out. They might as well have not gone.
It could be argued that Katy could have canceled out Joe's vote anyway, but in this scenario Katy wouldn't have gotten to the poll without him.

Heh, that's what we have done at home on a couple of occasions - but rather than driving away in the car my wife and I first checked "Isn't it so that we would vote on opposite sides in the EC voting?" and then we saw a movie at home instead... :-)
