A student is in class, when a subject is raised of which he has personal knowledge. Though he has considerable insight into the topic, he does not join in the discussion. Why?

Is there something specific about this subject that keeps him from discussing it? Or would he keep out of discussions of other subjects in which he has a similar degree of knowledge?
Is his age relevant? Is the subject at hand relevant? Is the nature of his personal knowledge relevant? Is his level of knowledge compared to his peers relevant?
Would participating in the discussion reveal something about him that he wants to keep hidden? Does he want to hide the fact that he knows a lot about this subject? Or is the reason more specific?

Blooper: The specific class he is in doesn't matter so much as his general course of study.

Does this have to do with his nationality? Was the class discussing terrorism? Immigration? The government of another country? Perhaps he comes from a country whose government his new home condemns?

Could this happen in any country? Only a few? Only one? Has it likely happened? Does it likely happen often?

I am aware that all Israeli citizens are required to spend a certain number of years in the armed forces. However, they may choose to serve this time in intelligence rather than combat training. When choosing this, there is some type of confidentiality agreement they sign. Are any of these relevant?

Can I just verify that I understand where we are at here.

This person (can we call him David?) is an Israeli citizen, and previously served in his country's armed forces during the Arab-Israel war of 1949. He is now (in the 1950s) living in a foreign country which is not (officially, at least) hostile towards Israel, and is attending a military academy there. David is embarrassed about his involvement/actions during an incident in the war, and as such won't speak about it in class. The incident is not shameful in general, but is under the circumstances.

Is that all right so far?

Is David only embarrassed about discussing this in front of his class? Would he discuss it with family? Friends? Other Israelis? Anyone else?

How would David's fellow students respond to his involvement in the incident – Anger? Hatred? Distrust? Pity? Mockery/teasing?

Is the country in which he is now living important? As stated above, I understand the government of that country is not hostile towards Israel – is it sympathetic? Neutral? Does the government's position reflect the mood of its people? If not are they hostile? Sympathetic? Neutral? Does any of this matter?

Does he hope to join the military of the country in which he is now living? Is this relevant?

Was the country David is in now on the 'side' opposing Israel at the incident in question?

Did he worry he would get in trouble based on actions he specifically took (i.e. something he did and no other person at the site of the incident did)? based on actions he took as a part of one of the factions at the incident (e.g. a commander ordered a unit to do X)? solely based on the fact that he was a part of the faction he was part of? because of something else entirely?

Was he in the military? The Israely military? Did he order some action to be taken? That lead to people being killed? That shouldn't have been? Did he make a mistake? Did he himself kill someone in the relevant incident? Is it ok to google stuff that happened in that area in '49? Or would that spoil the puzzle?

(No one really knows.} Did he himself kill someone in the relevant incident? Yes. Is it ok to google stuff that happened in that area in '49? I doubt general googling would work, but it might help IF you don't stumble over the solution. Or would that spoil the puzzle? Quite possibly, since it's about a specific, relatively well-known incident.

Was he the leader of the Israelis at the incident? Did he cause the incident? Yes to both.

The country he's in now -- part of the Middle East? Syria? Jordan? Lebanon? Egypt? None of the above. As mentioned previously, he's in Europe.

Whoops... went back, saw country and Asia together, and somehow forgot that was about the country he was coming from. Mea culpa.

Country he's in = UK? Spain? France? Italy? Greece? Germany? Norway? Sweden? Austria? USSR? none of the above?

Is he in hiding now? in order to avoid persecution? prosecution?

Does he want the people in his class to avoid knowing: that he is Israeli? that he was at the incident at all? that he was the leader of the faction opposing their country's? that he caused the incident? that he brought about the deaths of citizens of the country he's in now?

Did he order an attack that he thought was justified? but was really unprovoked? Did he cause the deaths of innocents (or noncombatants, if that's a better word) at the incident?

Country he's in = UK? This. Spain? France? Italy? Greece? Germany? Norway? Sweden? Austria? USSR? none of the above?

Is he in hiding now? No, but... in order to avoid persecution? prosecution?

Does he want the people in his class to avoid knowing: that he is Israeli? that he was at the incident at all? This. that he was the leader of the faction opposing their country's? This. that he caused the incident? No one's positive about this. that he brought about the deaths of citizens of the country he's in now? This.

Did he order an attack that he thought was justified? Yes. but was really unprovoked? Again, no one's positive. Did he cause the deaths of innocents (or noncombatants, if that's a better word) at the incident? No.

Pretty much solved at this point, so...

SPOILER

*******************

Ezer Weizman was one of the first leaders of the Israeli Air Force. During the Israeli War of Independence, both the Egyptian and Israeli Air Forces fielded Spitfire fighter planes (surplus British aircraft). The British still maintained bases in Egypt and also flew Spitfires. Shortly after the ceasefire in January 1949, an Israeli flight of Spitfires, led by Weizman, came upon a British flight of Spitfires. No one is sure what happened; The British may (or may not) have been in Israeli airspace, and may (or may not) have been mistaken for Egyptian by the Israelis. At the time, the British were generally anti-Israeli and pro-Arab. Weizman led an attack which shot down several of the British aircraft.

Later, during the 1950s, Weizman took courses at the Royal Air Force staff college in England, learning to command his very new air force, alongside Arab and British classmates who were learning the same thing. He and his instructors stepped very carefully around discussions of this particular air battle!
