Dooming her to a terrible fate - Did each time they did it increase the probability of the terrible fate? The "doing" implied... Saying something? Touching her? Something to do with money? Would "doing it" to anyone from childhood doom them to the same terrible fate? Or was there something about her or her situation that doomed her in particular? The fate - death? Illness? Physical handicap? Psychological trauma? Social problems? Economical problems? |

Likely Touching her? Likely Something to do with money? Likely Would "doing it" to anyone from childhood doom them to the same terrible fate? Yes Or was there something about her or her situation that doomed her in particular? The fate - death? Illness? Physical handicap? Psychological trauma? Was it 'unspeakable' because we didn't have the terminology to describe it? Was it something to do with her diet? Her education? Did they know they were subjecting her to it? If they knew, did they care? Is this a comical puzzle? For instance, would an average reader, on seeing the answer, think that 'unspeakable' and 'terrible fate' were comic hyperbole? Did they perhaps expose her to repeats of 'Deal or No Deal' with Noel Edmonds? Did they perhaps put salt in her food, condemning her to a life of sanctimonious lectures from nutritionists? |

Treecleaver: Did they give her an unspeakable name? No Entity: Is the fate unchangeable? No Is it torture only to the person experiencing it? Yes, I suppose, although as with all terrible fates, it hurts her loved ones too. (by the way, don't forget that this puzzle isn't really serious in nature) Can this happen to an adult? By 'this', do you mean the terrible fate, or what led to it? The former can happen to anyone, the latter can happen to an adult I guess, but it's much more common in children. and if so would it have the same effect? Yes Did it disable her in any sort of way? No Was the fate only for when she was an adult? No Did they hinder her development in any way? (eg watching too much "educational" baby's television hindered her education?) Noish |

Anything to do with the kinds of psychological phenomena you hear about in psych 101, like the gambler's fallacy, or the difficulty of learning a second language later in life, or social darwinism (apologies for the far-flung examples, but you get the idea)? The subset of people for whom it's unspeakable - are they related by location? Genetic factors (like ethnicity or gender)? Age? Upbringing? The language they speak? Economic class? Political affiliation? Religious affiliation? Is there a name that encompasses the whole group (like "Quakers" or "women")? |

Balin: Is it very hard to talk about (emotionally, I mean)? No Ohlala8: So, does the group all speak one language? Yes If so, English? Yes. Some may speak other languages too, but when they come together, English is the norm. Is there literally not a word for her fate? Or it's unpronouncable? It isn't her fate that's 'unspeakable', it's what her parents did to her that is. |

Is it the sperling (in Brooklynese) of the daughter that's "unspeakable", right? By "unspeakable", is it physically difficult to speak about it? Did the daughter punch a third party in the mouth, giving him (or her) a mouth injury? Thus, the third party wouldn't really be able to speak about it? |

Is it not possible, in any way, to speak about the sperling? And the reason for this is what we need to know? Are any of those involved in the puzzle dead, by any chance? And thus they cannot speak about it? |

Is it not possible, in any way, to speak about the sperling? One cannot say it in a specific context. And the reason for this is what we need to know? Yup! But like I said, you already know it! =) Are any of those involved in the puzzle dead, by any chance? I'm sure they aren't. And thus they cannot speak about it? |

OK, so are there two third parties (you and your friend - that would make it a fourth party)? Or is one of you the girl in the puzzle? A parent? And guessing you were involved was just a wild guess. Kind of like breaking a lock with a cue ball =D |

OK, so are there two third parties (you and your friend - that would make it a fourth party)? No, it's me and many other friends, as well as other people in the community, who I may or may not have come across. Or is one of you the girl in the puzzle? A parent? No to these And guessing you were involved was just a wild guess. Kind of like breaking a lock with a cue ball =D I'll need to try that in real life! =P |

So you...wait, this involves a whole community? And none of you can speak about it? (Then how did you make a puzzle about it? Or does that not count as speaking?) Is it shameful to the community? Or have you all taken a vow of silence? |

Hang on...WHAAAAAAAAT? The girl and parents are not real? Do they only exist in a story? An urban legend? They exist only in this puzzle And the community doesn't like when people talk about it? Well...there's a very specific reason why members of the community do not say it, though they can 'talk about it' in a different way. And I am absolutely sure that you, and everyone else, know the reason =) |

Is it the fact that they SPOYLED her? And we can't type that word unless it's a spoyler? YES!!!!! ********************SPOILER************************ Ever since our imaginary heroine was young, her parents spoiled her (I can say it now! =P). Since that is an integral part of her identity, she is doomed to never be the subject of conversation on the LTPF, as we have a quirky disability--we cannot actually type the word during the course of a puzzle. Unless, of course, someone chooses to make a puzzle out of how we can't have a puzzle about her... Sorry for the cheeky puzzle, but I had a lot of fun, especially towards the end! Thanks everyone for playing! =) And Balin, looks like it's my turn to freak out over your puzzle now! |

Yeah, as soon as I got it I was kicking myself for not getting it when you said I knew it. Great puzzle! Oh, and some credit must go to Alhucema for figuring out that it was the LTPF community. I wouldn't have gotten it without that, and I definitely was spared some major freak-out moments in the near future. =P |
