Is the professor's department/field relevant? If so, [insert list of departments/fields] (perhaps pulled from the list of majors at a random university such as mine or yours)? Could this be call exaggeration? Lying? Stretching the truth? Faulty statistics? Did he intend to make a misleading statement? Does he believe the misleading statement? Does the statement take a rough form of things per unit time (such as papers/grants/students/etc per year/month/day/etc)? Does it take form of something else per unit time? Following on the publications route that is a yesish or yope...is he counting publications that shouldn't be counted (such as writing a letter to journal and calling it a publication)? Are we talking about publications as in journal articles? Does he quote his number of emails sent (and thus mixing emails about golfing with Prof Smith with emails about quantum philosophy of the spleen with Prof Smith)? Could a few minutes of research on the part of the listener fix the misleading nature? Could a few hours? Is the misleading statement near impossible to sort out so that no one could really know for sure? Is this misleading to himself? Close colleagues? Staff/faculty of the university? Dean/president/administration? Public? Media? Random people? Would an academic see through the misleading nature? An academic of his field/department? A close colleague? |

Is the motive for misleading relevant? If so, is he trying to keep his job? Angling for a promotion? Looking for more funding? Looking for students? Resources/labspace? Is he saying he has a lot of publications? More publications than someone else? More than average? More than the minimum? Is he counting publications submitted? Reaching review process? Actually put in the journal? Publications referenced in other publications? Drafts on his computer not submitted yet? Is the relevant statement based on opinion? Qualitative facts (or at least stating such facts)? Quantitative facts (or at least stating such facts)? Statistics? By what percentage, roughly speaking, is he stretching the truth? +10 percent? +50? +100 percent? -10? -50? -100? Do we have to know the fundamentals of the academic process? Would it help to know them? Or am I barking up the wrong tree trying to think like an academic? |

HINT: Keep in mind that what the lazy professor says would virtually always be taken as saying that he's making progress but, if taken literally, would be compatible with his having done nothing at all. Of course, he's trading on the fact that no one will take it that way. |
