Galfisk (Galfisk) Did the whole banana do it? Good question. I suppose the whole banana did it, inasmuch as a banana can do anything, but one part(ish) is relevant. Or just the peel? No. Or the fruit itself? No. Is the slipperiness of banana peels relevant? No, but good thought. Could an apple have done it? Yes. Or a banana made of plastic? No, good q. Is a prank relevant? Practical joke? No to rest. Deathateaster (Deathateaster) Michael Jackson's song Smooth Criminal relevant? Not particularly, nor is the Alien Ant Farm cover. =) |

Is there just one person directly interacting with the banana? Two? All 10-20 people? Is this person/people touching it? sniffing it? peeling it? intending to eat it? intending for someone else to eat it? using it for performance art? using it to make something? combining it with other objects/fruit? If not everyone is directly interacting with the banana, are the others watching? Or just affected by what happens? When the banana "does it," it is peeled, correct? Is it otherwise intact and banana-shaped? Is it bruised? mashed? sliced? underripe/overripe? Is the peel still attached at the bottom? |

Okay, so they're using it to make something - sort of. But not a food product, correct? And they're not touching it at all. This doesn't have anything to do with bananas as a phallic symbol, does it? Is the banana still on a banana tree? Wind or weather relevant? Does this scene take place outdoors? Does someone step on the banana? Sit on it? Kick it? Does it get planted (I assume bananas can be planted) and grow a new banana tree? |

It might help find the answer, but it's not quite integral to the puzzle statement. It'll also be very hard to guess. Other fruits? Vegetables? Plant matter? Animal matter? Chemicals? This. Balin (Balin) "Murder": does someone die? No, but it's referring to a human victim. Is something destroyed? No. Does something die? No. Woodworm (Woodworm) Is the murder victim human? Yes, keeping in mind that no actual killing takes place. Is it a play or similar reenactment of a murder? Yesish, I wouldn't call it a play or reenactment though. Is the pulped banana yellow in colour? Probably this, irr. Whitish? Reddish? Greenish? Is the victim another fruit? No. Is the killer a fruit? It seemingly turns out to be, yes. Is the pulped banana used as an eco-friendly substitute for the lead piping in a game of Cluedo? Haha, no. Are people dressed up as fruit? No. Are we in a school playground? In a school play? A murder weekend at a hotel? A hospital? No to all. Is fake blood relevant? No. Is the mushy banana intended to resemble something else? Yesish. Are plasters (eg band-aids) relevant at all? No. Is the pulpy banana smeared on to anyone's skin? No. Are allergies relevant? No. Does anyone exchange the pulpy banana for some other substance at any time? No. Are chocolate liqueurs relevant at all? No, but tasty. Does the banana come to light as a result of forensic research? Yes! ish! Is there a banana stain on some fabric? No. |

Yes, alcohol and small amounts of other chemicals. Is the banana touched? Seen? Just this, as far as what's relevant. Smelled? Probably this too. Heard (don't know how that could be possible, but why not I'm imagining some kind of squishy noise...=))? Tasted? Is chemical analysis relevant? Yes, for svv or "chemical analysis." |

*********************RECAP So it turns out the banana did it. The banana did not literally do anything, but the "it" refers to murder. At some point in this story, the banana is mashed up and mixed with alcohol and small amounts of a few other ingredients. It is not intended for consumption, and indeed the banana is not consumed at any point. There is a mock murder investigation of sorts going on in a school. Only one specific part of the investigation is being imitated. A mass spectrometer is involved. |

I feel all the elements are there, and any further questioning would be nit-picking, so... *******************SPOILER A college biology class is investigating DNA, and to make the necessary lab classes a little more fun, the instructor devises a mock murder investigation. A sample of the "murderer's" DNA is recovered from the scene, and the class must find out whether the "suspect's" DNA matches it. Of course, a bunch of undergrads aren't going to be playing with human tissue; the suspect is actually a banana, one of the easiest organisms to extract DNA from. All that's necessary, in fact, is to toss a banana in a blender with ethyl alcohol and a few other easy-to-get chemicals. The DNA will precipitate to the surface as a mass of thin threads, that can be spooled out on a glass rod. The students perform a few more procedures to purify and observe the DNA, then stick it in a mass spectrometer. The mass spec is a machine commonly used on CSI-type shows, that shows a unique image of any DNA, represented as a series of short, glowing lines in a vertical column. The class creates this image from the banana DNA, and matches it against the DNA image the teacher supplies as the murderers'. They are identical, and so the class promptly concludes that the banana did it. |
