Arrogance twice prevented him from reaching his goal. HINT: This puzzle contains a theme from each of my two non-neologistic puzzles. Go! |

No problem. Him=Ham? Was his goal the same both times? Was it his own arrogance that prevented him? Did arrogance cause him to say something? Do something? Make an assumption? And regarding the hint: A game involved? Video game? Is basketball involved? Another sport? |

Did the same thing happen both times? Or did he learn from the first attempt, but still somehow let his arrogance get the best of him the second time around? Did he compete against another person? Against the computer? Against himself? |

Did the same thing happen both times? Yes, in that the essential details were the same, but not all the minor details. Or did he learn from the first attempt, but still somehow let his arrogance get the best of him the second time around? No Did he compete against another person? Yes Against the computer? No Against himself? No HINT: He was overconfident. And this is a true story, though that's not really part of the hint. |

Did he try to show off? And his opponent took the opportunity to steal the victory from him? Did he compete against the same person both times? Is the other person a relative? His little brother maybe? |

Did he try to show off? Yesish to Yes his opponent took the opportunity to steal the victory from him? No, but OTRT Did he compete against the same person both times? No Is the other person a relative? His little brother maybe? No It's not necessary for the solve, but... -"He" is a friend of mine from school. -The first opponent was another school friend. -The second opponent was me. The point is that the same basic situation occurred both times. |

Ok, so I have the details right... Friend is playing a football video game? Against you and the other friend, both individually? Specific game relevant? And his overconfidence resulted in a loss both times? Because it made him do something sort of like showing off? |

Is the game Madden? (Referring to the puzzle title) Does one have to know about: rules/practices of football? Of football Video games? A specific video game system? Is the type of video game controller used relevant? could the same thing have happened in a multiplayer FPS (first perosn shooter)? Did he try to pull a cool move in the game? Or in person, while playing the game? Such as looking away from the screen? |

Is the game Madden? (Referring to the puzzle title) The first time it was, the second time it wasn't. However, that's irrelevant; the point is that it's a football video game. That is where I came up with the title though - nice deduction! Does one have to know about: rules/practices of football? Yes, but not too much Of football Video games? No A specific video game system? No Is the type of video game controller used relevant? No could the same thing have happened in a multiplayer FPS (first perosn shooter)? No Did he try to pull a cool move in the game? Noish Or in person, while playing the game? No Such as looking away from the screen? No |

Was his relevant cockiness present within a single play? Or more an overarching decision of the game? Like giving himself a handicap? Or purposely choosing the worst team in the game? |

A play in which he passed? Did his cockiness involve the length of the pass? Coverage of the receiver? Is what he was doing with the quarterback relevant (other than the pass)? Like running him way back of the line before passing? Or just waiting a long time and evading the defense? |

Is what he was doing with the quarterback relevant (other than the pass)? Like running him way back of the line before passing? Or just waiting a long time and evading the defense? None of these |

Was he not passing at all? Just running with one player straight for your goal, while dodging your players? Until you managed to intercept him? |

Was he not passing at all? During the "cocky" play, he did not pass. Just running with one player straight for your goal, while dodging your players? Until you managed to intercept him? Hmmm. I'm starting to confuse myself with my answers, so I'll post a RECAP: During a football video game, a friend of mine became cocky on one play and did something. The next play, he threw a pass and was intercepted, thus preventing him from doing what he could easily have done the play before. That should clear things up now. |

During the cocky play... He stalled getting a first down? Or touchdown? He purposely lost yardage? And on the fourth down, he passed for an interception? |

Ok, breaking things down... He is playing with a friend (or you)? And there are two relevant plays? The firt play he does something cocky? The second play he throws for an interception? Does he have the ball on the first play? Or does he intercept (or recover a fumble), break away, and wait at the end zone instead of taking the touchdown? |

Ok, breaking things down... He is playing with a friend (or you)? Yes And there are two relevant plays? Yes The firt play he does something cocky? Yes The second play he throws for an interception? Yes Does he have the ball on the first play? Yes Or does he intercept (or recover a fumble), break away, and wait at the end zone instead of taking the touchdown? This is EXACTLY what happened! (The second time, that is.) The first time was a hair different, but I'll describe it in the **********SPOILER********** Since I have a tendency to tell stories in way too much detail, I'll continue to do so here. In late seventh grade, my friend Jake was playing Madden against another school friend, Joe. Jake caught a kickoff and broke a great return, but ran out of bounds at the 7 instead of scoring, as he was winning and was confident he would score. Needless to say, he didn't, as he was intercepted in the end zone on the next play. Flash forward a few months to early eighth grade. At a different friend's house - I think this was at Stephen's house (not that it really matters) - I was playing Jake in a college football video game. I fumbled, and Jake picked it up with only green in front of him. He stopped at the goal line (and I tackled him), confident he would score. On the next play, deja vu occurred, as I intercepted it 2 yards deep in the end zone and ran it 68 yards. Nice work to It_so_happened again for chipping away at the puzzle and finally taking it down. |
