Was what the cat did deliberate? Did it do something TO the boyfriend and/or girlfriend, and if so, which one(s)? Or was it only indirectly responsible?
Did the cat belong to one of them, and if so, which one?
Are any of the following relevant:
Race?
Age?
Location?
Era?
The cat's sex? Age? Breed? Whether it was neutered?
Was it a domestic cat? A feral domestic cat? A wild cat? A tame wildcat?
Was anyone or anything killed in the process?

So the girl noticed that the bird was gone?
And was angry at the guy?
Because she thought it was his fault somehow?
Or because it in fact was his fault that the bird was in such a position to be gotten by the cat?

* * * SPOILER * * *

The cat killed the homing pidgeon that was carrying a letter from him to her. We can assume that she was waiting for an unusually important letter, perhaps with the reply to a proposal. The female assumed that the male never sent a reply and thus wasn't interested in her anymore. Their relationship was ruined, but it could be that they managed to clear up this misunderstanding later on. =)

A bit of research on the subject of homing pidgeons made me realize that it had to be HER bird, since homing pidgeons only fly one way - back home. He must have borrowed her bird to send it back.
