A man is walking through a supermarket when he notices a sign on display that is completely false, which is obvious to him and to everyone else in the store. He chuckles at it, but is not at all surprised. Why not? |

Is anything written on the sign? Did the person writing it know that it was false? Was the text true when the sign was put up, but isn't true anylonger? |

Did the sign refer to an item/items that was sold out? That had been moved elsewhere? That had been replaced? Or somehow had been changed? Or was it the sign that had been altered? |

If the sign informs of something positive that is no longer true, is it possible that customers will be disappointed? Does the sign have only one word on it? A few words? More? |

Is reality even better than what the sign says? =) The items that the sign are referring to, are they present? Will it help to figure out what these items are? |

Because it's now frozen? Nope. It may also help you along to know that even those that put up the sign are aware that it is now false. |

So the item is out of date? Perhaps an expiration date is involved? Is it relevant why the sign (and/or the fruit) has not been replaced? |

Is anything else in the store in a similar state of decay? Is the sign itself decayed? Is the store closed down? Or abandoned? |

Is the sign above the fruit? Yes Some other product? No Is this why the man chuckles? No So the item is out of date? Yes Perhaps an expiration date is involved? Only that it's way past Is it relevant why the sign (and/or the fruit) has not been replaced? Yes Is anything else in the store in a similar state of decay? Yes indeed Is the sign itself decayed? Probably not Is the store closed down? Or abandoned? YES! I could have you figure out other minor details, but since the "lateral" part has just been solved, I think I'll post a... ***********SPOILER******************** In this true story from my home city of Fort Worth, Texas, a grocery store owner goes bankrupt, lets go of all his workers, and just leaves the store, locking the doors behind him. All the food was left as it was. No one realized what had happened until a foul smell had permeated the surrounding area. Finally, the city government figured out what had gone on, and dispatched a HAZMAT team into the store to clean it up. The state of all the food was horrible, and the city spent nearly $100,000 dollars to get everything cleaned up. The man in this puzzle had seen a sign for "fresh fruit", and given the complete rot, had to chuckle. This story was featured on "Life After People" on the History Channel. Thanks for playing! |
