A hunter fires a shot. Soon after, he realizes his mistake. Soon after that, he is dead. NOT the classic - avalanches are not involved. |

Location or time-period relevant? Science fiction or fantasy relevant? Like a spaceman punching a hole in his own ship? Is the hunter H/A/M? Is anyone else involved? Was the shot fired at a creature or person? Was the shot from a lethal weapon? Did he hit his target? Was he shooting from close, medium, or long range, and is this relevant? Can the injury that killed him be classed as crushing, piercing or slashing? Asphyxiation? |

Did some think it was an accident? No Manslaughter (accidental killing)? Probably closest to this, but again, I don't know the precise legal definitions Was he firing a rifle? Yes A pistol? No Did a tree fall on him? No Or on his victim? No Was the shooter physically injured? Yes Was his cause of death obvious to the untrained eye? Yes Was the sequence of events obvious, or did it need to be reconstructed by rangers/police? Depends on how smart the rangers were, but it probably needed reconstruction. Is this a true story? Fiction? FYOI? This, but based off someone else's imagination. |

Was the human target in any way camouflaged (or the likes, e.g. mask, costume, etc.)? Did the hunter shot or killed himself? Did the hunter know the victim? Are light conditions (day/night) relevant? What does "soon after" mean? Less than a second? Seconds? A minute? 5 minutes? |

Was the target H/A/M? Yes Could this story really happen? Yes, but unlikely Was he struck with a stick or other natural object? Assuming "he" is the hunter, yope. Was it blunt damage that killed him? Again, assuming "him" is the hunter, yes. Did he fall? The hunter, yes. Did something fall on him? No David and Goliath relevant? No, but let's call the victim David, and the hunter Goliath. Was the human target in any way camouflaged (or the likes, e.g. mask, costume, etc.)? Yes! GREAT question! Did the hunter shot or killed himself? No Did the hunter know the victim? No Are light conditions (day/night) relevant? Yope. Let's assume it was around dusk, and it wasn't the clearest of conditions. What does "soon after" mean? Less than a second? Seconds? This. Probably 10-15 seconds. A minute? 5 minutes? |

Did the hunter know he was gonna die soon after he realized his mistake? Did the hunter correctly recognized the actual identity of his target when he shot him? Was he specifically hunting for that specific target? Did a tree trunk hit him? |

Was David camouflaged as: a plant? If so a tree? An animal? Did Goliath shoot upwards? Downwards? Level? Did he fire more than once? Relevant? Did Goliath, before his death, find out he had killed David? Was the actual sequence Goliath shoots - hits and kills David - dies himself? |

Goliath is a hunter. He aims at what he thinks is a deer, but when it falls dead, he realizes it was another hunter (perhaps in camouflage). At this point, he either steps back in surprise and falls from his stand, or he jumps off in remorse and kills himself... though one would think he could just shoot himself with his own gun. Unless it's one-shot. Yeah, that's it. :p |

Was he shocked that he had killed a person? The hunter, yes Was the person he killed wearing clothes that made him look like a moose? YES!!! Like a Bullwinkle costume? Just a generic moose costume. Told you this was silly! And of course that's the **********SPOILER********** To sum up, David's in the woods, wearing a moose costume. Why? Who knows. Meanwhile, Goliath is out moose-hunting. From his tree stand, he spots what appears to be a moose, aims, and fires one shot straight into its head. Unfortunately, the "moose" is David in his costume, and he is killed instantly by the shot. David falls, and when he hits the ground, the costume's head falls off. Goliath sees this, and realizes that he has just killed a person. In shock, he falls out of the tree stand, hits his head on a rock, and dies. The idea for this puzzle comes from an old Woody Allen routine, which can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmnLRVWgnXU Again, great work to everyone involved, especially Murmur and Jenburdoo for some great questions and the takedown. |
