They only obtained three, which landed in Russia after raids over Japan. The US was unconcerned, as they felt the USSR could not reverse-engineer the plane. In 1947, however, three were sighted over a military parade. Analysts assumed these were the three captured aircraft until a fourth appeared, and then a fifth, and the flabbergasted analysts realized the Soviets were building their own B-29s. Over 800 planes, called the Tupolev Tu-4, were eventually built. American defense policy had to be drastically changed to account for them. | ||
