Because he was in some respect extra careful, he caused the very thing he was trying to avoid: Bob did not understand his last name correctly, so when he got to the concert Betty, the bouncer, did not recognize his name on the list and did not let him in. His whole life, people had trouble spelling his name. So one day, Alan won a call-in radio contest for free tickets to a concert he really wanted to see. During the commercial break, Bob the DJ asked for his information so he could be put on the list for comp tickets. He gave his date of birth, etc. and when asked for his first name he said "Alan." But when asked for his last name, to be extra careful that Bob wouldn't misspell his name, he said "L-I-U." When he got to the concert, though, Betty the Bouncer couldn't find an Alan Liu on the list, and assumed he was trying to gate crash. Mr. Alan Ellyu was a no-show.
