Does something relevant pass through the holes in the rings? Do the rings carry a magnetic field? Are they radioactive? Or otherwise dangerous? |

Would I expect the position to be in the government? But not the armed forces? I don't exactly know what one would expect, but I suppose I could say that you would expect government, but possibly not armed forces (because he is neither uniformed nor armed) Is he a commander of some sort? no Does he have an official title? not sure what this means exactly. He may have an official title of some sort (but I don't know what it is). There is a general job title that you would certainly know, though. Does it include the word "General"? no |

And small FA Was the death intentional? yes! Again, small FA Suicide? no Was the dead person in it when it happened? On it? Under it? it = the object? hm, no-ish to all Did the person drown? yes! Was the person HAM? yope, FA still present A lighthouse keeper? probably not Relevant? no Or did more than one person die? yes! that was the FA |

Did a rope or cable pass through the rings (back when they were still used of course)? Were the people who died themselves anchored to the rings somehow? or were they killed by an object that was anchored to the rings? Were the rings attached to rocks along the shore? near the base of the lighthouse? or to pieces of stone that were in fact part of the construction of the lighthouse itself? |

Did Smith choose to work there? Yes Does he have a chance at working somewhere else? Perhaps, yes A possible promotion, maybe? no But "they" want him to stay working there, so they tell him about the rings? no Did "they" invent the legend about the rings? no Hint/Recap: In years past, the Coast Guard would hire civilians to man lighthouses. However, because of the legend at this particular lighthouse in the US, which involved people being tied to rings embedded in the rocks and left there until the tide came in and they drowned, many people thought it was haunted and were wary of working there, and thus it was hard to find people for the job. So the Coast Guard worked up a "special treatment" that made it easier to find people for the lighthouse. What was it? |

Is sick leave relevant? Paternity leave? Is his pay relevant? Benefits? Did he get better health, dental, etc. benefits? No to all I will recap by saying that he gets a certain permission that other lighthouse workers don't, which relates to his being able to leave the lighthouse. It's not related to hours or days off (remember that lighthouse workers would generally live on the premises, therefore didn't really come to work and go home). And, as was stated before, it could serve as a "ghost insurance", to use a tongue-in-cheek phrase. |

Is the benefit mainly related to the fact that Smith lives at the lighthouse? Works there? Both actually. More just the fact that he is there. Does the benefit save Smith money? Time? Neither, really. Hint: He can only use the benefit once. |

Does it allow him extended leave? yope For a personal reason? see below Is he allowed paid leave for a certain period of time if he is forced to evacuate because of a ghost? again, yope. You're basically right on the reason for leaving, but "paid leave" and "certain period of time" are somewhat innaccurate You guys are crazy close. |

Is the place on the lighthouse grounds? Is the "certain place" on lighthouse grounds? If it's that last one, does he get to go to another lighthouse in case of a ghost? And there it is! *************SPOILER************** This is a true story of the Execution Rocks lighthouse in New York. The story is: "Execution Rocks, sitting at the west end of Long Island Sound in New York since 1851, lends itself to grisly tales just due to its name. According to folklore, the British avoided public executions in Colonial times because they would inflame the revolutionary spirit of the American people. Instead, they would carry the condemned to these reefs at low tide, chain them to rings embedded in the rock, and wait for high tide to carry out the death sentence. Some say the skeletons were left to torture the minds of the newly condemned as they faced certain death. The legend of the executions had such hold, that when lightkeepers were assigned to Execution Rocks, they were under a unique contract. No lightkeeper was to ever feel chained to the reef. Instead of stating a set length of duty, their contract read that their length of service was for as long as they were willing. If for any reason, they requested a transfer, it was instantly granted." The story of the chainings has been disputed by historians, but an interesting story, nonetheless. Thanks to all who participated, especially Balin, who showed great endurance in unveiling the puzzle's final, annoying detail. |
