And yes! ************** SPOILER ************** Between 1967 and 1973, there was still a state of war between the Arabs and Israel, and there were many shooting incidents. Four Israeli pilots spent four years as POWs in Egypt. To keep busy, they taught each other (and the guards) various subjects. One item they used was a copy of The Hobbit they had obtained through the Red Cross. After informally translating it for those who couldn't speak English, they decided to do the job properly. Their translation (published after their return to Israel) is generally considered better than the professional translation released while they were in prison. The professional translator, after all, did not have three others with whom to discuss every nuance of his work, and did not spend three years perfecting the result! Israeli readers today now have a choice, and more choose the "pilots' translation." than the original. |
