Did they want to find them? So "they" are children, right? Is a game going on? Are they in school? Is this a scavenger hunt? Are the objects of varying shapes and sizes? Or more than one of the same object? |

Bigger than them? Did they look in the wrong places? Were they mislead? Real physical objects? Or images on paper? Or in a computer? |

Were they looking for a manufactured item? Food? Something alive? Were they indoors? Outdoors? Location otherwise relevant? Is anyone besides the children relevant? Did a person hide something from them? If so, was it someone they knew? |

Were the items hidden by an adult? Their parents? Other relative? Teacher? Or was it another child? A sibling? A friend? A child that was angry with the searching children? Or one who generally didn't get along with? Did whoever hid the items do it to punish the children? To tease them? Were (some of) the items things the children had used before? If so, did they do so regularly? Have they never used them before? Or are they new? Are the items supposed to be presents/surprises for the children and whoever hid them didn't want them to see them before a certain time? Are the children in a hurry? Do they need the items immediately? |

So the children wanted to see their presents before the actual gift giving? And their parents had known that they would look for them and said something that set them on the wrong track so they'd look only in certain places although the presents were somewhere else? And since the children didn't expect to find their presents in a place other than, let's say their parents' bedroom, it could be that they had already seen them in, let's say the living room, but it didn't occur to them that these are their presents because they had to be in the bedroom? So the presents could well be right behind them (reference to the title) when the children were in the living room but they didn't realize it because, in their mind, nothing that's not in the bedroom can be a present? |

Maybe that's a little far out, but... Did the parents (knowing the children would consider that way too obvious to believe that's the real place) truthfully told them where to find the presents and the children looked everywhere but there thinking their parents would never give away the place prematurely? |

Were the presents in the closet? yes In the stockings? In the children's rooms? yes Under their beds? The parents' bed? Were the parents holding them? Had the presents been wrapped yet? ******** SPOILER ********** Simple story - the mother of the story told how she hid the children's Christmas presents in their own closets, knowing that they wouldn't look in there. Maybe their clothes 'lived' on the floor and it was only her who put them away. She also 'hid' newly made cookies in the cookie jar, and would laugh at their attempts to hunt throughout the entire kitchen for them, anywhere but where they belonged. Well done |
