Are the origins required/helpful knowledge? Is the song about losing one's religion? Losing faith in God? Faith in something else? Can we wiki it without ruining the puzzle? I seem to recall it has something to do with a guy trying to get his message out in the media, and being silenced/gagged/misrepresented/something like that...relevant? |

Are the origins required/helpful knowledge? Might be. Is the song about losing one's religion? No - that's the scrund. Losing faith in God? No Faith in something else? No Can we wiki it without ruining the puzzle? I think so - feel free to. I seem to recall it has something to do with a guy trying to get his message out in the media, and being silenced/gagged/misrepresented/something like that...relevant? I thought it meant something else, but either way, you got the scrund. Now all that's needed is who "they" are, and why the song almost didn't make "the list". |

Hooray yet another REM inspired puzzle. So Warner Bros had a scrund about Losing My Religeon in so far as they thought the song was about religeon whereas it's about losing one's temper? This scrund nearly prevented the song from being selected as a single? and thus nearly prevented it from appearing in the singles chart? Did they feel the song title would prevent certain radio stations from playing it thus reducing it's airplay and sales? Or did they think the public would be loathe to buy a single with that title? Is the fact that this song represents REM's breakthrough into the mainstream relevant? Is there a separate Religeous song chart? Were they worried about how the song would be categorized? |

Hooray yet another REM inspired puzzle. Figured you might appreciate this one =) So Warner Bros had a scrund about Losing My Religeon in so far as they thought the song was about religeon whereas it's about losing one's temper? I'm not sure if that's exactly what it's about, but in general, yes. This scrund nearly prevented the song from being selected as a single? Yes!!!! and thus nearly prevented it from appearing in the singles chart? Exactly right! Did they feel the song title would prevent certain radio stations from playing it thus reducing it's airplay and sales? Or did they think the public would be loathe to buy a single with that title? Irrel Is the fact that this song represents REM's breakthrough into the mainstream relevant? Noish Is there a separate Religeous song chart? I think so, but irrel Were they worried about how the song would be categorized Yope Who's up for a **********SPOILER********** "When REM recorded their album Out of Time in 1991, ["Losing My Religion"] was the song that stood out as an obvious single. The only problem was that Warner Bros. execs didn't want to release a record with religious symbolism. But according to lead singer Michael Stipe, the song actually has nothing to do with religion. 'The phrase "losing my religion" is Southern slang,' he explained. 'It means "fed up" or "at the end of your rope."' REM insisted that it be released, and Warner Bros. finally gave in. Good decision: It was a Top 5 single that won a Grammy for Best Song in 1992." [Source: Uncle John's All-Purpose Extra Strength Bathroom Reader, "Behind the Hits," page 98.] So the puzzle statement could be reworded as such: Because Warner Bros executives thought "Losing My Religion" was a religious song, it almost wasn't selected as a single, and thus almost didn't make the Top 100 Singles chart, or list. Nice job goes to everyone who worked on it, especially Potato and Galfisk for the groundwork, and Peter365 for the REM solve. Random fact: when I was in Florida a couple weeks ago, the resort I was staying at had a karaoke night, and this was the first song I sang. |
