Katrinka has two siblings, but she claims to have three, although there is no particular person whom she is claiming to have as a sibling, nor does she expect better treatment from someone who favors large families. How come? |

are there particular circumstances when she claims to have three? to a particular person? or people? in a particular place? at a particular time? is she a child? adult? would this puzzle work as well is she actually had 1? 4? relevant what sex the siblings are? male? female? might she for the same reason claim to have four? is it relevant that she claims to have a larger number? or is the number three the relevant bit? does she seek to gain a benefit? avoid losing a benefit? is she acting altruisticly? greedily? fearfully? sneakily? boastfully? modestly? kindly? generously? is her motive morally good? bad? neutral? is she acting in a criminal way? is she cheating? is she trying to help someone? is she trying to stop something bad happening to someone else? make something good happen to someone else? are any of these relevent: her politics? her race? her nationality? her age? her physical appearance? her family? her romantic relationships? her hobbies? her education? her place of residence? her job? her pets? her financial status? her health? |

so - what is she actually claiming then... that she has another sibling? unknown to the person she is speaking to? is this said in a healthcare setting? to a doctor? are transplants relevant? any kind of tissue donation? blood grouping? genetic typing? does she hope to gain financially? by donating blood? or something else? is she selling something? being paid for a service? does she plan to imitate this extra sibling? claim something on their behalf? is inheritance relavant? does she say this in a court? in public? in private? to a stranger? a friend? does she want sympathy? does she want to get a charitable donation? is there some particular relevant feature of the extra sibling? a health problem? does she state, 'I have a sibling who is X'? or just 'I have another sibling'? forgot to ask - relevant if the extra sibling is male or female? if so male? |

Interesting... apologies if I happen to repeat questions: She tells the doctor she has 3 siblings when she in fact has 2, and this would probably lead the doctor to be worried. Correct? Worried about her physical health? Her mental health? Someone else's? Is she trying to prove that one of her other (real) siblings is mentally unfit? Is Katrinka's mother relevant? Her father? Any other relative? Is adoption relevant? Claiming additional dependents? Is the relative age of the fictional sibling relevant? Is Katrinka the oldest, middle or youngest sibling? |

After the mother was revived, the doctor, wanting to determine whether the old woman was demented, asked her "How many children do you have?" When she said "two," the doctor asked Katrinka, "How many children does she have?" Recognizing the chance to get her mother declared incompetent & gain control of her mother's assets, Katrinka said, "three."This puzzle is based on an actual case of a woman who realized that she could have ruined her mother's life this way.She didn't do it, but she wrote an article about how doctors should be more careful & less trusting of family members when evaluating an old person for dementia. This is my third puzzle about someone who tries to make a relative look demented! Please check out my new puzzle, with is about something different. |
