Well, for a while I thought it would be "The cake is a lie" ... Is the list a list of people? celebrities? Were the angry people angry because: they didn't understand? they weren't on the list? they were on the list? they were frustrated trying to find the message? trying to figure out its meaning? the message referred to them? they kicked themselves after seeing the message? Should we try to figure out who these people are? |

Let me try a recap... A statement about cake was hidden in a list of people sharing a certain quality. The statement consisted of the first letters of their names. The statement made some people angry; some of these people were on the list, but not all. One of the people on the list (not one of the angry folks) became unexpectedly famous. This good? |

By "the statement" in your answers to my previous questions, do you mean the puzzle statement? Or the hidden message? If it's the latter, am I correct in saying that the message referenced both The Game and cake? Were the people angry because they lost The Game? |

Let me try a recap... A statement about cake was hidden in a list of people sharing a certain quality. Right The statement consisted of the first letters of their names. Right The statement made some people angry; In lateral way, yes. But not the content of the statement! some of these people were on the list, but not all. Yes, though I can't really tell who was and who wasn't angry about it, but the people on the list and some other people had reason to be angry. One of the people on the list (not one of the angry folks) became unexpectedly famous. Right This good Very close, except for the reason why their were angry and he became famous. There is something about the list that made possible to make that statement. By "the statement" in your answers to my previous questions, do you mean the puzzle statement? Or the hidden message? This, "the statement about certain cake" If it's the latter, am I correct in saying that the message referenced both The Game and cake? Yes Were the people angry because they lost The Game? No |

Did the order of people listed make the statement coincidentally? Intentionally? Were the full names of the people given? Was their first name listed first? Last name (like Presley, Elvis)? And Whirligig: If you're interested in "The Game"-related puzzles, check out Fermat1601's "Just to annoy you" in the July 2010 archives. You may have come across it while lurking. |

Darn it, I just prashcked! The order was the source of anger ... Was the list ranked? As in best to worst, worst to best, richest to poorest, poorest to richest, etc.? Were the angry people at the top of the list? bottom of the list? middle? throughout? Was the statement something like "I L I K E B U N D T C A K E A N D I J U S T L O S T T H E G A M E" or similar, with other types of cake? Do we need to find out anything more about the statement? Should we start looking for names that were on the list? Is this news site well-known? Does it have a newspaper equivalent? TV? Radio? |

Yes Were the angry people at the top of the list? bottom of the list? middle? throughout? Pretty much everyone on the list had reason to be angry. Was the statement something like "I L I K E B U N D T C A K E A N D I J U S T L O S T T H E G A M E" or similar, with other types of cake? Do we need to find out anything more about the statement? No, only relevant thing is that it's made of first letters of their names, fact that you figured out that it's also referring to the game is just a bonus. Should we start looking for names that were on the list? Oh boy that would be hard! :D Of course not. Is this news site well-known? I would say yes, but DOYD of well known. Does it have a newspaper equivalent? Yesish, it's a magazine. TV? Radio? You pretty much got it all, you don't have to go to all these details, but there is one thing I want to let you figure out before I $poil. Hint: The list that contained the statement was result of something. |

So the candidates were both the poll choices and the people polled, right? Well... maybe I misunderstood the question. They were the poll choices and all the other people could vote for them. Sorry if I misled you. Consider this BLOOPER ALERT. Were they polled on who they'd vote for? Who they'd like to take office (or whatever it is) if they could not do so? Was the poll question loaded so as to produce the cake statement? The rest of questions is based on this FA, sorry for that. I think you can now just try to recap and I will probably post the $poiler... |

So a bunch of people were polled on which of 100 candidates they'd vote for. When the poll choices were ordered by most number of votes to fewest, a statement about cake was spelled by the first letters of the candidates' names. Some of the candidates (and other people) were angered by the statement, but one of the candidates who was not angry became unexpectedly famous. This all good? Was the guy who became famous the candidate who got the most votes? Fewest? Somewhere in the middle? |

Sorry for the delay, I didn't have much time lately. So a bunch of people were polled on which of 100 candidates they'd vote for. I probably kind of confused you with this whole poll thing, they simply voted for the candidates in the poll. When the poll choices were ordered by most number of votes to fewest, a statement about cake was spelled by the first letters of the candidates' names. Some of the candidates (and other people) were angered by the statement, Not so much by the statement, as by the results of the poll being affected by the statement. but one of the candidates who was not angry became unexpectedly famous. This all good? Although there were some FA, I think I'm going to spoil the puzzle now. ****************SPOILER***************** When magazine Time organized their annual poll The 2009 Time 100 of the most influential people in the world, they also nominated Christopher Poole, AKA "moot", the founder of the site 4chan.org. It's an imageboard website famous for it's /b/ section, anonymous board with "no rules" policy. It's usually full of internet trolls and nerds, and so when these people found out that moot was nominated for an internet poll, they decided they want him to win. They managed to manipulate the voting system and not only that they made moot number one, they also ordered nominees so the first letters of their names spelled out phrase "marblecake also the game". As you can imagine lot of people were surprised by this result and I suppose that neither people from Time and other enlisted people liked it. Nevertheless it made moot most influential person for year 2009 and thus more famous then he ever expected to be... Interesting thing about the "marblecake also the game" statement is that it also includes reference to The Game, one of many memes that was popularized by 4chan. If you want to find out more about this community gathered around 4chan I recommend watching moot's TED Talk: http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/christopher_m00t_poole_the_case_for_anonymity_online.html Thanks to everyone who participated in this puzzle, mostly Balin, Galfisk and Whirligig. It lasted longer than I expected, but at the end you pretty much got it right.
