Because Errol was growing so rapidly, his cousin sent him an odd present. How come? |

you missed a couple of things: made of plastic? wood? paper? glass? is it longer in one dimension than the other two? is it's shape the reason for the yope to computer mouse? is one dimension less than a computer mouse? I'm not good at just trying to identify an object from questioning so hopefully one of these other questions will lead into a fruitful line of questionning... is it a representation of an animal? or person? is it a play on words? where the name of the object is somehow fitting for someone whose height is increasing? would the present be as appropriate for a short teen who grows rapidly to a normal height, as to a normal teen who grows to a tall height? that is - is it the change in height that is the relevant thing? or the achieved height? would the present be appropriate for a teen who is growing steadily but not rapidly? is it relavtn that the person who gives the present sends it rather than hands it to him? this implies that the sender does not see Errol often - is this relevant? is the cousin reacting to a big change in Errol since he last saw him? is there any relevant feature of the cousin? that might explain why he gives this particular present? might anyone have done so if they had thought of it? is the cousin's age relevant? might Errol's parents have given him this present? |

so the cousin gave Errol a pair of socks? one sock? and there is something unusual about the socks that make them an unlikely present? am I correct in assuming that a pair of socks is generally considered to be a fairly usual, if uninspiring, present? should we be finding out what these socks look like? what colour they are? how big they are? what particular function they have? are they special socks in some way? for special situations? do the socks signify something else? do they have relevant wording on them? a picture? are the socks a metaphor for something else? does the cousin actually expect Errol to wear them? |

Upon hearing that Errol had grown "a foot," his cousin sent him three socks as a Christmas present, either as a joke or because the cousin really believed that Errol had grown a third foot! The relevance of nationality is that the American Errol would have described his growth spurt in non-metric terms, which might have been misunderstood by a non-American cousin reading Errol's letter. This puzzle was harder that I expected it & I hope my next one will be, too. Please check it out you know where. |
