does the claim relate to: money? health? education? romance? crime? genetic inheritance? selfishness? greed? secretiveness? politics? jobs? hobbies? race? the law? art? sport? competitiveness? jealousy? religion? idleness? small mindedness? is the claim about the effect upon children of their family life? the relationship between parents and children? between siblings? is the claim made usually by people about their own families? to explain their own problems? or failings? is it a claim made about particular families? or the general idea of families? |

I'm going to jump in at the very end of this puzzle, with a suggestion. Sorry guys, if this happens to be correct. There are loads of ads in papers (at least in Norway I used to see several every single day commuting in to work) about cats (or dogs for that matter) being given away/rehomed, because of allergies in the family. But it's often not true, just an excuse. Is this the solution? |

Is it simply the reason for not having a cat was because of allergies? When typically, mothers who say this have other reasons for not wanting the pet (maintenance, responsibility, etc.)? I love cats too! |

Some say that living -- especially as a kid -- together with animals, cats being the most to blame, is bad for your health, because you are bound to inhale hair and this will be damaging to your respiratory system. OTRT? As I lived all my life with cats, I personally came to the conclusion that smoking two packs of cigarettes per day, as I do, might be even more damaging, but ... |

Health & fitness aren't everyone's top priority. Some people prefer to pursue happiness, & that's okay. I've never smoked, but, as old forum hands know, I used to be enormously fat (more than 2x my present, normal weight). It was DELIGHTFUL to eat whatever I wanted. It made every day an adventure |

Of course! AT LAST, here's a *****SPOILER ************ A common & pernicious cliche about illness is that the patient's family suffers more than the patient himself, which, of course, deflects sympathy from the suffering patients. Some bioethicists even say patients have a duty to die in order to avoid burdening their families! But of course, it's generally the patient who suffers most if he's conscious & aware what's going on. In my family, however, my mother didn't suffer from being severely allergic to cats. After all, she didn't want a cat & could easily avoid them. But I wanted a cat--so I suffered more from her allergy than she did. No one will suffer if you check out my new puzzle at the bottom of the page. |

Hurrah! Well done Nimue! And one could say, rather than expecting LTPF puzzle-solvers to suffer most from not getting an answer to the puzzle they're trying to solve, it's the puzzle host who suffers most, especially if they thought the puzzle would go quickly and it drags on for months! But oh, such enjoyable torture *grin* At least we're not sick, just obsessed. LOL. :-D |

An obsession is a strong interest someone disapproves of. (This deep insight comes from a character in one of my short stories.) |

True, but my family disapproves of me "being stuck on the computer" (aka the LTPF, my LotR fanfiction sites, and email) "and not doing anything useful". |

WOW, that took long enough! And of course the answer was so simple.... Kaylee - now that I'm at college, I don't have my family bugging me for being on the computer all day, so I know what you're going through. Although I do have class - it's college, after all. |

Balin - yes, it is. How disappointing of it. =P I'm glad you can understand how I feel, though. |

Kaylee--So what if your time on the computer isn't useful. You have the right to pursue happiness. |

Nimue - I'm glad you understand, too. Of course, happiness doesn't pay the bills (another of my mother's favorite comments) |
