I like it better because I know what it really is. I'm sure most people who like it don't know what it really is, but there's probably at least one other who knows, and likes it. |

You should, it's a very funny animated sci-fi comedy show by the creator of The Simpsons. It has lots of very nerdy/clever humor, as most of the writers have Ph.D.s in various scientific fields. Is it an act? A joke? Is it something done with an object? with multiple objects? Is fire involved? Danger? Improvisation? |

You know that, and you like it more for this reason. Correct till now? Now, I guess I'm totally missing the lateral part of it... Yes You know that, and you like it more for this reason. Yes Correct till now? Yep Now, I guess I'm totally missing the lateral part of it... No, you've pretty much got everything. Is it only connected to the other person who probably knows and likes it, or is there still something to find about the song? I'd say we have more than enough for a **********SPOILER********** "The communist Chinese government issued a propaganda leaflet during the 1989 pro-democracy Tiananmen Square protests, claiming that protestors were alone in their dissent and that the rest of China was 'shiny happy people holding hands.' Michael Stipe...wrote a song based on that leaflet - the sappiest, most brainless pop song he could imagine. It was supposed to be a satirical joke mocking people who ignore tragedy and world events. It didn't work. Most people thought 'Shiny Happy People' was a catchy pop song, not a parody of a catchy pop song. It reached the Billboard Top 10, one of only four REM songs to do so. It was such a contrast to REM's usual straightforward, socially conscious music that Stipe issued a public apology for the song. The band never played 'Shiny Happy People' live after 1991 and, despite it being one of their few actual hits, they refused to include it on their 2003 greatest hits album." [Source: Uncle John's Bathroom Reader Plunges into Music, "I Hate My Song," p. 123.] And for curious eyes: The person who I think probably knows the real reason behind the song, and if so, probably likes it, is our own Peter365, who, as a big REM buff, probably knows more about the song than I do. But that's only my speculation. And as for the title, this is my third REM puzzle, and "Shiny Happy People" was REM's fourth (and final) single to reach the Billboard Top 10...hence, "Number 3, Number 4." Kudos of the day go to Galfisk for the early groundwork and Mattiel for the solve. |

Nice! I am indeed part of those who liked that song just as a catchy pop song, and from now on i'll be the third one in the forum to like it better because of what it really is ;-) |
