Well, so far, two of my puzzles have been solved. So I've decided to post a well-planned Lateral Adventure.

One thing you should keep in mind during this adventure is that there are a LOT (probably 20+) of puzzles that don't need to be solved -- they are merely hints. This might make you think that this adventure is horrendously long, though; it's not that long, really.

Google or similar might be required, as I reference several things you might not know about.

Good luck, and have fun!

You wake up. Everything seems gray and blurry.

You appear to be in bed in a hexagonal room. Each wall has something on it, too blurry to see. There is also a sign at the foot of the bed, too blurry to read. Something rustles in your pocket as you turn around.

Everything is in grayscale. Odd.

Well, you have no idea who or where you are, or how you got here, so you had best look around. If you can make out anything, of course -- there seems to be blurriness almost everywhere.

Check out that thing in your pocket. Is it blurry? If you can tell what it is by sight, do so. Otherwise, feel it and see if you can figure out what it is.

Get out of bed. Walk forward towards the sign and see if anything becomes less blurry. Then walk towards all of the walls. See if they become less blurry. If not, stand at one of the walls and look around the room from there. See if anything is less blurry.

Is there a door anywhere? Or just the six walls?

Look under the bed as well. What do you see?

Check out that thing in your pocket. Okay. Is it blurry? Somewhat. If you can tell what it is by sight, do so. It appears to be a medicine bottle. The label has some kind of gradient on it. Here's a picture: http://img818.imageshack.us/img818/1829/medicineblur.jpg Otherwise, feel it and see if you can figure out what it is.

Get out of bed. Walk forward towards the sign and see if anything becomes less blurry. Nope. Then walk towards all of the walls. See if they become less blurry. Ditto. If not, stand at one of the walls and look around the room from there. See if anything is less blurry. Still blurry.

Is there a door anywhere? Or just the six walls? There might be a door on one or more walls; I couldn't tell you because of the blur.

Look under the bed as well. What do you see? Nothing.

Feel around on the walls - see if you can find a door.

Open the medicine bottle - are there pills in it? Or is it empty?

Reminds me of the beginning of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy text game. And at the start of that game, you had a headache, and an antiseptic in your pocket... If there are pills in the bottle, what do they look/feel/smell like?

Feel around on the walls - see if you can find a door. There are two doors on opposite walls, both locked.

Open the medicine bottle - are there pills in it? Or is it empty? There are pills, but I wouldn't recommend taking them before you know what they are.

Reminds me of the beginning of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy text game. And at the start of that game, you had a headache, and an antiseptic in your pocket... If there are pills in the bottle, what do they look/feel/smell like? The HGttG similarity is a coincidence. From your medical knowledge, they seem to be multivitamins.

Multivitamins, eh? Try taking one, and see if your vision clears.

Let's examine the bed - look and feel under the pillow, blankets, sheets, and mattress. See if you can find anything.

Multivitamins, eh? Try taking one, and see if your vision clears. Nope. Perhaps it would be better to try and identify it. There's a picture in case you haven't noticed. ;)

Let's examine the bed - look and feel under the pillow, blankets, sheets, and mattress. See if you can find anything. It appears to be a normal bed.

They're Centrum vitamins, aren't they? And they have a gradient scale on the bottle - that has to be significant somehow.

The sign says "You are here: CENTRUM." The six walls contain, starting at the one to your left and going clockwise:

-A panel with a slit in it.
-A microphone sticking out of the wall, with a panel below it.
-A locked door with a keyboard attached.
-A bin extending from the wall, with a panel above it.
-A jug attached to the wall, with a panel below it.
-A door with a keyhole and writing on it: "Take it somewhere shiny."

What could it all mean? And where do you begin?

Look at the ceiling, do you see anything interesting. Also take a look on the floor, is there any carpet or rug? If so try to look under it.
Also once the blur is gone, look under the bed once again.
Look into the bin and the jug, see if there is anything in there.
Can you see something through the keyhole?

Look into the bin and the jug, see if there is anything in there. Nothing in the jug. The bin has mirror walls on the inside, except for the one against the big wall, which is steel with the letters "YAH" on it.
Can you see something through the keyhole? It looks like a round room with another bed.

Open up the vitamin bottle again. Is there anything written on it? On the underside? On the outside? Inside? Under the cap? Dump out all the pills - is there writing on the bottom?

And try shouting "YAH" into the microphone. Or type "YAH" into the keyboard.

Open up the vitamin bottle again. Is there anything written on it? See following. On the underside? Nope. On the outside? Yes, the name, "From A+ to Zinc," the supplemental facts, etc. Inside? Under the cap? Dump out all the pills - is there writing on the bottom? No to rest.

And try shouting "YAH" into the microphone. Or type "YAH" into the keyboard. The voice says "Access Denied" both times.

Also, can the sign be removed from the bed? The sign is standing on the floor next to the bed. If so, try pulling it off. It's stuck to the ground somehow. See if there's any writing under it, or on its back. Only what has been mentioned above.

HINT: You're trying to solve puzzles you aren't ready for yet, and you're trying to make use of objects that have been already used to their full potentials, but you're assuming that a certain object is no longer useful when it is.

Go back to sleep. Does anything change when you wake up? Everything!

You are now in an identical bed in a library. Again everything is grayscale, and some things are blurry. You appear to be in an octagonal, wooden room. The walls again each have something on them: a bookshelf, a fireplace, two gray books, three blurry pictures, and an exit (in no particular order). Outside, you can see a wooden path, a small fountain-like pool, some pillars, some trees, and the shore. It would appear that this is an island.

Do you still have the vitamins with you? Say "Centrum" again, and see if everything gets unblurry.

Does the "exit" lead outside? Is the door locked? With a keyhole? A keyboard? A keycard slot?

Is the bookshelf full of books? Partially full? Empty? Do any books stand out?

The gray books - can you read them? Does it appear that they were taken from the bookshelf?

Is there anything in the fireplace? Anything next to it?

Can you tell what the pictures are?

Does the "exit" lead outside? Yes. Is the door locked? With a keyhole? A keyboard? A keycard slot? There is no door, just an opening.

Is the bookshelf full of books? Yes. Partially full? Empty? Do any books stand out? Yes, the select few that aren't burnt to a crisp.

The gray books - can you read them? BLOOPER: I obviously didn't think this through enough. There are no gray books, just book-shaped burn marks. :P Does it appear that they were taken from the bookshelf?

Is there anything in the fireplace? A red button. Anything next to it? No.

Can you tell what the pictures are? The exit to the room, a map, and a passage.

Walk outside. Does anything stand out? Is anything out of place?

Go back in. Read the map - see what it's a map of.

Take a look at what the unburned books are. Seeing as we're in Myst, are any of them red, blue, or white?

And push the red button.

Walk outside. Does anything stand out? Is anything out of place? There's a note laying on the ground to the left.

Go back in. Read the map - see what it's a map of. It's a map of Myst Island and says "TOWER ROTATION."

Take a look at what the unburned books are. Seeing as we're in Myst, are any of them red, blue, or white? They appear to be Atrus' journals, plus the elevator code book.

And push the red button. A panel slides down.

I will now assume that you're completely familiar with Myst. Stay away if you're spoiler-prone. Myst is now exactly like it is at the end of the game, with a couple of minor differences. One is the bed, and that's the only important difference now.

You can do stuff quickly now. For instance, you can say "Go to Achenar's room in Stoneship" instead of the individual steps required to get there. The only exception is if it involves the bed, because you haven't figured out its full potential yet.

You'll need to get something here, but you can get it later if you want.

I'm not completely familiar with Myst; just when I used to play it with my dad. Unfortunately, that was about 10 years ago, so I actually don't remember all too much.

Take the note on the ground (and read it), and check out the panel that appeared when you pushed the red button. Is anything written on it?

Take the note on the ground (and read it), and check out the panel that appeared when you pushed the red button. Is anything written on it? No.

The note reads:

Catherine,
I've left for you a message of utmost importance in our fore-chamber beside the dock. Enter the number of Marker Switches on this island into the imager to retrieve the message.
Yours,
Atrus

This note is from the game, but you might be able to make use of it in a new way.

If not, go back to sleep in the bed, I assume, and see where you are when you wake up - back in Centrum, or maybe somewhere else. Well, it's somewhere else.

You appear to be in the middle of a horse pen at a small ranch. You can see the outer wall of the ranch, as well as a path leading out, through a gate in the horse pen.

Everything is once again gray and blurry.

Can you tell where the path leads to? Go take a walk, and see if there's anything that stands out? The path appears to exit the ranch. There are some small buildings here.

Is there anything on the outer wall? If so, feel it, and try and figure out what it is. There's a tall tower with a door.

Can you identify the items that are not blurry? Where are the blurry items located? There aren't really any obvious "items," I was just saying that only certain objects might or might not be blurry, and I can't tell you which they are off the top of my head.

Check out the buildings. Do any of them open? And does the tower door open? All of them open.

Do any of the horses have names? If so, what are their names? You have no idea what their names might be; there isn't anything to indicate it.

Go over to the chicken building. What are the chickens doing? Are they hens? Roosters? Are there any eggs lying around? No. They're just running around. They appear to be mixed gender.

Until you figure out where this is, there isn't anything else to do here, really. It's time to move on.

So the titular REM cycle appears to go from Centrum, then to Myst, and finally to the unknown farm location.

Put the hay in the bin. Does anything happen?

So the titular REM cycle appears to go from Centrum, then to Myst, and finally to the unknown farm location. Correct, but on Aug 7, you saw another bed ...

Put the hay in the bin. Does anything happen? "Yah," something happens. The panel on this wall opens, revealing a small, blue, potato-shaped device with holes in it and what looks like a mouthpiece.

Ah, yes...forgot about the bed through the locked door. Wait...was that door locked? Try opening it.

Restatement: This REM cycle goes Centrum-Myst-farm and repeats. Wonder where else we're going....

Can you take the potato device? Wait...I know, it's an ocarina! Try going over to the microphone and playing the "Song of Time" on the ocarina, into the microphone.

Also, something else can be done here. Remember my hint about the note?

Try typing "8" or "eight" into the keyboard. If the door opens, check out the inside. Then go to sleep twice so you head back to the farm, and say "Ocarina of Time" or "Legend of Zelda".

Hmmm...Fishing Farm? Hyrule? On Lon Ranch? (Never played Zelda...have to Google this.) It's Lon Lon Ranch, but everything clears up on Hyrule. Now either a) figure out how the Ocarina can be used here, or b) figure out what the note is for. I would suggest b), because you'll need a LOT of research if you've never played Zelda. In fact, even posting asking for help on a Zelda forum might be necessary. For now, re-examine the walls in Centrum.

Go to sleep so you go back to Centrum, then look at all six walls again. What is on them?

And I think I saw something while Googling that may help with the ocarina, so...go to sleep twice (back to Lon Lon Ranch - sorry for the earlier typo) and play Epona's Song on the ocarina.

Go to sleep so you go back to Centrum, then look at all six walls again. What is on them? See above:

The six walls contain, starting at the one to your left and going clockwise:

-A panel with a slit in it.
-A microphone sticking out of the wall, with a panel below it.
-A locked door with a keyboard attached.
-A bin extending from the wall, with a panel above it.
-A jug attached to the wall, with a panel below it.
-A door with a keyhole and writing on it: "Take it somewhere shiny."

And I think I saw something while Googling that may help with the ocarina, so...go to sleep twice (back to Lon Lon Ranch - sorry for the earlier typo) and play Epona's Song on the ocarina. A brown horse shows up. This isn't what you need, though -- try playing Epona's Song somewhere else in the ranch ...

I really slacked off on my description of the stable as a "stable." You should go back there. :P

Oh, and like before, I'll now assume you have full knowledge of the game, even though you don't. You can for instance say "Go to Ganon's Castle. Is the bridge there?" and I'll know what you mean.

OK, go to the stable, buildings, and tower, and look around. Now that things are clearer, what can you see? Nothing much seems clearer; the bedroom is Malon's. There's a bottle on the floor in the stable, as well as some cows.

Also, go to all those places and play Epona's Song on the ocarina. One of the cows in the stable offers you milk (!), but says that she can't give you any, since you don't have an empty bottle.

Can you slip the note into the panel with the slit? If so, try that (although I doubt that'll work, but why not).

Describe the bomb. Does it appear portable? If you can pick it up without setting it off, do so.

Describe the bomb. Does it appear portable? If you can pick it up without setting it off, do so. It looks like a bomb from Zelda. You can set it off wherever you wish.

Insert the tape into the tape player. Rewind it, then eject it and look for clues on the tape. After that, reinsert the tape, play it, and re-rewind it when it's done.

When you play it, it shows the same hologram you saw when you entered -- Achenar's mouth. When you rewind it, Achenar is saying "Rush Limbaugh understands ..."

Inside is a bed, a key, and a locked door. The key does not match the door.

Go back through the keyboard door to Centrum 2 (is it OK if I call it that?). Go to sleep - where are you now?

Drat.

Go back through the keyboard door to Centrum 2 (is it OK if I call it that?). Sure, but I'd prefer a different name because it implies that it's not still "Centrum," which it is. Go to sleep - where are you now? You are standing at the end of a road before a small brick building. Around you is a forest. A small stream flows out of the building and down a gully.

Oh, and the bed is here, and guess what? Everything is gray. And blurry. Again.

Inventory check:

Centrum vitamins
Video tape
Key

Oh yes, we also have the Zelda bomb.

...and the note about the video tape. If there's a missing item there, even I don't remember it. In any case, you only need two of these items; the rest are useless now.

I'm guessing those are the key and Zelda bomb, since those are the only two things we haven't used.

Continuing the trend of "video games I know nothing about," say that we're in Colossal Cave Adventure. And try to enter the building. If it's locked, use the key to open it.

Random thought: At the end of CCA, you have to BLAST to get out, so maybe we have to use the bomb here to make our escape...or that could just be exactly that: a random thought.

Continuing the trend of "video games I know nothing about," say that we're in Colossal Cave Adventure. And try to enter the building. If it's locked, use the key to open it. When you name this place, everything is clear and colorful.

The building is not locked.

You are in a well house, but I can't be bothered to look up the exact quote now.

Random thought: At the end of CCA, you have to BLAST to get out, so maybe we have to use the bomb here to make our escape...or that could just be exactly that: a random thought. I doubt that you would have to use a Zelda bomb in Colossal Cave.

Try this key in the second Centrum room's locked door. Assuming it fits, check out the new room. It's a large room with only a large door on the southern wall. The door has some writing on it.

Waitwaitwait...before you go to sleep, try the key from the second Centrum room in the locked door in this new room. If it fits, check out this new room. Then go to sleep. The door in the second room leads to the big room again.

Naming scheme to make this easier:

Six-sided room = "Centrum 1"
Room w/ CCA bed = "Centrum 2"
Room w/ other bed = "Centrum 3"
Big room w/ door = "Centrum 4"

You don't need to worry about how they're connected, as you can just tell me to go to any one of them. Now then ...

When you wake up, everything is ... guess what? GRAY AND BLURRY. AGAIN. :P

You appear to be in a large hall. There are four long tables going down the hall, as well as another table in the back. There appears to be no ceiling, and you can see storm clouds overhead.

So we're out of keys, right?

Even though everything is gray and blurry, maybe we'll be able to make out some items that can help us identify this place, as Google isn't helping at all. Take a look at the five tables - is there anything on any of them? Does the hall lead anywhere? Or is it enclosed? If it leads somewhere, where does it lead to?

Then go back to Centrum 4 and read the writing on the door.

The most notable ones I saw were a trident, axe, oyster, a couple of rods (one which you wave to open a fissure, and one which explodes), lamp, and a whole lot of treasure. Hmmm...

TIME FRAMES
Myst - After the Stranger gives Atrus the page
Hyrule - Child Timeline, after OoT
Colossal Cave - At the beginning of CCA
Hogwarts - A year or so after HPatDH ends

BTW, if you're reading this and you don't want HP spoilers, turn away now.

CCA treasure list: gold nugget, jewelry, coins, golden eggs, silver, diamonds, treasure chest, rugs, Ming vase, emerald, pyramid, pearl, gold chain, spices, trident. Did I miss anything?

(And I've read all 7 HP books, so I'm not worried about HP $poylers, although good move with the warning.)

Let's see...

The Myst time frame...right after the page is given, the Stranger finds the library burned, so that makes sense, given the appearance of the Myst room now. So I'm guessing the "rooms" for each game mach the time frames on the note, although I'm not sure what happens "a year or so after HP&DH ends". Do you mean "after the last chapter," or "after the epilogue"?

Being lazy at the moment, I'm just copy-pasting the "Rowling supplement" as supplied by Wikipedia, hidden in white text below.

In an interview,[10] online chat,[11][12][13] the Wizard of the Month section of her website, and during her 2007 U.S. Open Book Tour, Rowling revealed additional character information that she chose not to include in the book. The first bits of information were about the trio and their families, starting with Harry.

She said that Harry became an Auror for the Ministry of Magic, and was later appointed head of the department. He also kept Sirius Black's motorcycle, which Arthur Weasley repaired for him, but he can no longer speak Parseltongue after the destruction of Voldemort's soul fragment within him. She also said that Ginny Weasley played for the Holyhead Harpies Quidditch team for a time, then leaving to establish a family with Harry, and later became the lead Quidditch correspondent for the Daily Prophet. Ron Weasley worked at George's store for a time, Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes, and then joined Harry as an Auror. Hermione found her parents in Australia, and removed the memory modification charm she had put on them for safety. Initially, she worked for the Ministry of Magic in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, greatly improving life for house elves. She later moved to the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and assisted in eradicating oppressive, pro-pureblood laws. She was also the only member of the trio to go back and complete her seventh year at Hogwarts. Rowling then went on the explain that Dumbledore's relationship with Gellert Grindelwald extended beyond mere friendship; indeed, Rowling has revealed that "Dumbledore is gay, actually",[14] and harboured romantic feelings for Grindelwald.[15] Next, Rowling revealed the fate of Voldemort. After his death, he was forced to exist in the stunted form Harry witnessed in the King's Cross limbo, as his crimes were too severe for him to become a ghost.

Rowling also explained the fates of several secondary characters, starting with the Weasleys. George Weasley continued his successful joke shop. George married fellow Quidditch player Angelina Johnson and had two children: a son named Fred, in memory of his late twin brother, and a daughter, Roxanne. Next, Rowling proceeded to explain Luna Lovegood's future, saying that she searched the world for odd and unique creatures. She eventually married Rolf, a grandson of the famed naturalist Newt Scamander,[13] writer of Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them. They have twins called Lorcan and Lysander. Her father's publication, The Quibbler, has returned to its usual condition of "advanced lunacy" and is appreciated for its unintentional humour.

Rowling then gave briefer histories on some more of the minor characters, as follows. Draco Malfoy married Astoria Greengrass and had a son named Scorpius. Percy Weasley married a woman named Audrey and had two daughters, named Molly and Lucy. Firenze was welcomed back into his herd, who finally acknowledged the virtue of his pro-human leanings. Dolores Umbridge was arrested, interrogated, and imprisoned for crimes against Muggle-borns. Cho Chang went on to marry a Muggle.[16] Neville Longbottom became professor of Herbology at Hogwarts and married Hannah Abbott, who became the landlady of the Leaky Cauldron.[17] Bill and Fleur Weasley had a total of three children, a younger son named Louis, and two daughters, named Dominique and Victoire.

Rowling also revealed further transformations in the wider wizarding world as follows. Kingsley Shacklebolt became the permanent Minister of Magic, with Percy Weasley working under him as a high official. Among the reforms introduced by Shacklebolt, Azkaban no longer used Dementors. Harry, Ron, and Hermione were also instrumental in reforming the Ministry.[11] At Hogwarts, Slytherin House became more diluted and no longer held the title as the pure-blood bastion it once was, although its dark reputation lingered.[11] Voldemort's jinx on the Defence Against the Dark Arts position was broken with his death, and there was a permanent Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher stated. Harry also is said to come to the Defence Against the Dark Arts class to lecture several times a year.[10] Lastly, Rowling says that a portrait of Severus Snape, who briefly served as Hogwarts Headmaster, had not appeared in the headmaster's office, as he had abandoned his post. Harry then ensures the addition of Snape's portrait, and publicly revealed Snape's true allegiance.[11]

Are any of the events in the first paragraph relevant? Second? Third? Fourth? Fifth? Does the key event involve Harry? Hermione? Ron? Draco? Dumbledore? Another student? A professor? Another adult?

Are any of the events in the first paragraph relevant? Second? this Third? Fourth? Fifth? Does the key event involve Harry? this Hermione? Ron? Draco? Dumbledore? Another student? and this A professor? Another adult? well they're adults in the epilogue

OK, go get the Ming vase in CCA. Go get the velvet pillow, too, so we don't accidentally break the vase.

From now on, I will refer to the "New Potter" person by the ROT13'd name (Tvaal), as such to prevent $poyling the story line.

So we have to "unite" Tvaal with the Ming vase somehow, and I'm guessing this somehow opens the door in Centrum 4. Speaking of the door, are there any noticeable locks on the door? Is there a handle? A knob? A keypad?

Go back to Hogwarts and look around. Is Tvaal there? Are there any doors in the dining hall leading anywhere? Do they open?

In that case, find Tvaal. Talk to the person and give said person the Ming vase.

Go to sleep in this bed. Please tell me that we wake up in real life and this is all a dream...or, just tell me what gray and blurry location this is. Actually, it's neither the end nor a gray, blurry location.

It's a hexagonal room with a locked door and a panel.

The panel says:

Centrum-Centrum-Centrum
Centrum-Centrum
Centrum-Centrum
Centrum-Centrum

All of the Centrum's are buttons.

You're close to the end now. Don't worry!

Well, the Centrum 1 cycle went to three places, and the rest went to two (all include Centrum as a place.

What happens when you push one of the buttons? Does the text on it change? Can you push them all in? Is there a reset button? An enter button?

Centrum
Myst
Hyrule
Colossal Cave
Hogwarts

Push the buttons so they go:

Centrum-Myst-Hyrule
Centrum-Colossal Cave
Centrum-Hogwarts
Centrum-Centrum

This should fit all 4 REM cycles - in order - and open the (hopefully final) door!

On the wall there's some writing:

Mix in a bat, or it might be illegal (5)

This looks cryptic to me. Unfortunately, cryptic clues are not my forte, though I'm fair at these things.

While I think...no, I'll just think for now. Maybe Woodworm can jump in with the solution and save the day. Although...try saying TABOO out loud, and pray that something happens.

Five hours later, I'm still not close to the answer.

Here's what I've been thinking:

-The word "mix" could be an anagram indicator; "might be" could also be the same.
-However, "in" could indicate an insertion, or possibly a concealment.
-The two most probable "definition" words are "mix" and "illegal."
-I have no idea what the "or it" could stand for.

One of your wordplay ideas is correct. The definition half is four words long. Two words are just filler to make the clue grammatically correct.

All right, continuing my analysis:

-Theory 1: We need to anagram ("might be") a word meaning "illegal" to get a word meaning "mix in a bat". However, "bat" could mean "flying mammal" or "baseball implement." The "or it" is the filler.
-Theory 2: We need to anagram ("mix") a word meaning "bat" (could be the mammal or the baseball equipment) to get a word meaning "it might be illegal." The "in a" is the filler.

These two seem the most plausible. Is either of these correct?

Theory 2 is closest, but you're doing something unnecessary and forgetting a word.

I suck at these myself, so I might have messed up in making it.

Revised Theory 2: We need to anagram ("mix") a word meaning "bat" (could be the mammal or the baseball equipment) to get a word meaning "or it might be illegal." The "in a" is the filler.

OR

Theory 2.1: We need to anagram ("mix") a word meaning "in a bat" (mammal or baseball equipment) to get a word meaning "might be illegal." The "or it" is the filler.

Any of these better? Still working on the clue....

Revised Theory 2 is closer, but you're anagramming a two-word phrase; you have a word in the wrong place. And you're still thinking you need to change something when you don't.

**********SPOILER**********

Suddenly, you wake up on some sort of bed. You get up. You're in a laboratory.

Yes, this looks familiar. You walk over to a journal and write:

Tuesday, August 24, 2010:

The virtual reality is working well now. Various fictional locations have been integrated flawlessly.

A strange bug is occurring involving memory loss while in the simulation. I should fix this soon, and also make the ABORT command visible without any kind of puzzle.
