A stouthearted lass, nicknamed Tortie For her passion was cats (she wants nigh forty) Went to university far away, to learn lots You might say, about cattle, sheep, and fowl (with earlobe spots) Now who is this clever child, that's easy It won't take much guessing to please me Where did she go, that's less like you to know And what's she done with this B.S. degree? |

So this Tortie was learning about Animals near and far, wide and stout? Is this tale very true, Or was't made up by you? And her age - should we figure it out? Now to her, was this learning a pastime? And a quick sidetrack - really, a fast rhyme: I'm sure you meant well, But I hope you can tell, You, um, might have reworded that last line. |

Tortie was mostly studying animals farmed Thankfully, they were not harmed By her during classes Though pains in the mik'tas They could be, and made her alarmed. To her, learning was a pastime, for fun In fact, she's quite eager to learn How we LTPF-ers Come up with these puzzlers So on here she can have her turn. Balin, I know, it's phrased a bit awkwardly But it's the proper term, you know, we must see To degrees Bachelors of Science The abbreviation applied is Even Tortie thinks it's quite funny. |

She had planned on vet, it is true But for that, right now, she can't do You see, it'd require Four more years to transpire And the cash for that, alas, is too few. |

The school was public, I think At least, it was among the UC's It was named for a town, not a city Which is nevertheless pretty And she chose to stay, doing capital work five days a week. |

I was quite sure I'd at one point said That centrally located, this co-ed of an Agricultural College of great learning and knowledge Was, but I'll indulge and soon get this puzzle to bed. Santa Barbara it is not, true, SD and San Francisco, too, LA and Santa Cruz, Neither did choose My sibling among students new. Berkley, perish the thought, Irvine, I really think not, Riverside's no, Nor is Merced a go; Davis was best of the lot. One more thing to surmise; What work holds sibling's prize Attention these days? I hope you'll put this craze of a Versponse to bed ere from boredom it dies. Really, Balin, I'm surprised at you, UC Davis is the best for Aggies, it's true; One would think Wiki'd know And you'd to their page go And find it's the top school, gold and Aggie blue. |

The work - could we call it a project? A job? Or a duty? An object? Now I ask, is a spe- cific animal re- levant to what she's doing, this I conject? |

For project, value's sufficiently vague A job's the thing, and duty, but object's nay Animal specific Is relevant, if it Can be described as a breed, not a single one, yea. |

These animals can be trained, maybe Pets, they could be, certainly At least in the breed, Tho' these ones indeed Are not meant for domesticity. A vet's office her workplace is not, But extreme cleanliness maintained at the spot They have tiny legs four If they have more Or less, it's abnormal, and they're caught. Closer and closer you're pressing With all of this wonderful guessing So closer you get You've stuck with me and yet I find what Tortie does rather depressing. |

Trap them's a Yope, but kill...I think no, At least it's not the intent of her work to do so The animals, mice, that's a true yes, What is their purpose served, you should guess? Tortie gives them special care She does get caused by her coworkers occasional despair. |

A zoo is not the right place, Pet store might be the space Where some of them will 'ventually go, Yet I know not if that's so So for now, keep to sterile-ly clean mice. They were not born in a shelter But other people do help her In keeping them fed, Well-watered and bred To be without defect, not off-kilter. |

You should not go jump in a lake Silly Balin, for a fine puzzler you make. Though your guesses are most all OTWT, It doesn't matter you see, For they will be sold to someone, money to make. The question, Balin, my friend, Is how soon this Versponse will end. For a hint; mice are sold To people who are usually old- -Er than those who at pet store would seek them. |

Ah, Balin, my clever, dear friend You have near sealed this puzzle's end These mice are indeed destined For laboratory testing And my sibling keeps close watch on them. Now, that's really the ***SPOILER***, you know, But I'm not easily satisfied, so The bonus question, Balin, I'm asking for help in; How large have my Versponse numbers grown? I really have lost count And should know the amount To properly number, no doubt. |
