I can't believe that no one has designed a nimthim yet! The idea is so basic, so simple, and by making one of these available much confusion could be eliminated! If there is a nimthim in the world somewhere, I don't know about it, and a Google search for one of these produced no results. The confusion caused by the lack of nimthims is frustrating, can be comical, and in fact has been the subject of stand-up comedy (although people who have found themselves confused and wishing for a nimthim may not find the humor in it).

So...what's a nimthim?

So even though such a device does not exist yet, and is merely a matter of fantasy, you can tell how big it would be? Does it need to be that big for one to fit inside it? or is it a slightly modified version of an existing object?

Are difficulites to walk/stand relevant? Or difficulites to use your hands? Or paralysis? Or people who are unusually short? Or unusually tall? This is all OTRT, I may have mislead by a previous answer. To clarify: a nimthim could help people with disabilities of any kind, but also people without any kind of disability
Is the item a whole house designed in a special way? No

So even though such a device does not exist yet, and is merely a matter of fantasy, you can tell how big it would be? Well yes - actually there is an item in existence that is almost a nimthim, and could easily be converted into one without altering its size, and its dimensions are close to those of a fridge - good question
Does it need to be that big for one to fit inside it? No, FA
or is it a slightly modified version of an existing object? Yes, this
does it assist with telecommunication? phones? emailing? speaking? listening? reading? singing? writing? sending images? None of these

Does the "almost-nimthim" have moving parts? Would making it into a nimthim entail adding moving parts (for example, wheels or a motor)? Or is it not clear what, if anything, would be physically changed to make it a nimthim, only that its usage would change in a particular way?

Would making it into a nimthim entail adding moving parts (for example, wheels or a motor)? No, good q
Or is it not clear what, if anything, would be physically changed to make it a nimthim, only that its usage would change in a particular way? The existing object would not have to physically change at all in order for it to become a nimthim, but there is an obvious physical change that would need to be done with regards to the usage of the existing object - another good q

Does this have to do with making something meant for right-handed people work for left-handed people? No

Is it something that would normally be found in a home? No, safe to say it would never be found in a home
is it an appliance? a plumbing fixture? Neither

Would the object become a nimthim by being put in an upright position? No, it's the opposite - a nimthim can be created by taking an existing upright object and putting it on its side
Instead of on its side? So no

The existing object when put on the side, will it automatically become a nimthim? This would be sufficient, but it's almost certain that...or do you have to do something to it? ...in order to be considered usable there would be 1 simple thing done to it

The existing object, is it something most people would know about? Yes use regularly? Perhaps - some people choose not to use it, some don't need to use it, and others may only use it once or twice then never again, but even people who don't use it know what it is.

When people do use one, do they own it? or are these things provided commercially, and rented or paid for per use? or are they provided at no cost to the public?

Do they sell anything in this-ish store? or do they offer some kind of service?

Do they sell anything in this-ish store? Things are sold in stores near the object, yes
or do they offer some kind of service? Also possible, yes

Is it a mall? Yes, the building that the object is currently found in most often is a mall
market with various stalls? Probably not

So (going ff the "signs" guess) would it be more accurate too say that people observe or look at these objects, rather than actively use them? Do they play the role of communicating information? If yes to the above, would a nimthim be read by people who are themselves laying sideways? or otherwise not standing upright?

Is this object, like a sign, nearly two-dimensional? or does it have significant depth, like the fridge example used earlier?

Do they play the role of communicating information? Yes
If yes to the above, would a nimthim be read by people who are themselves laying sideways? No or otherwise not standing upright? No - the current object is read by people standing upright, and the case would be the same with a nimthim

Is this object, like a sign, nearly two-dimensional? YES
or does it have significant depth, like the fridge example used earlier? NO - good q

Would the stuff displayed on a nimthim also be sideways? or would it still be the "right way up", just with the vertical and horizontal dimensions exchanged (like printing in landscape vs. portrait mode)? Would it consist only of text? only images? both?

Oh, and another thing I thought to check:
Does "sideways" in this case mean rotated within the plane of the object? or does it mean the plane is tilted, so an object that's normally on a wall is moved to the floor or the ceiling?

Would it consist only of text? only images? both? It would be both

or does it mean the plane is tilted, so an object that's normally on a wall is moved to the floor or the ceiling? This - the existing object is usually either on a wall or free-standing, and to become a nimthim it would be moved to the floor, along with one additional modification

Good questions once again

OK, then good thing I asked, because before I assumed that "sideways" meant that you'd have to tilt your head to the side to be looking at it right way up...

So maybe it's one of those "you are here" maps, and it would become a nimthim if it were on the floor and oriented the same way as the places on it appear in real life?

****** SPOILER ******

Nimthim (n): A "you are here" map in a mall or other large area that is, instead of being posted vertically, laid horizontally and inset into the floor (the slight adjustment) so that people who use the map can view it in the exact same orientation as the actual building.

According to comedian Jerry Seinfeld, this would be the best solution to the confusion and frustration of trying to orient yourself on a vertical map. He says the only way to completely make this work would be to put suction cups on your shoes so that you could actually walk on the vertical directory map. Obviously a nimthim would solve this problem.

Nice job guys, great questions that led to a fast solution by Biograd

But then the question arises - how do you allow for a nimthim using a map showing multiple floors?

Fun puzzle!
