If Rillette had been either more religious or less religious, she would have bought a new winter coat. How come? |

Would she have worn the winter coat to any religious services? Relevant? (I'm asking about both cases in which she would have bought the coat. So these are really 2 questions each) Is it relevant what the coat would have looked like? how warm it was? Would she have worn the winter coat, in fact, during winter? or some other time of year? |

Does it have anything to do with a real or professed level of faith? Or with where she is or where she might be if she had more or less faith (i.e., Jerusalem vs London?) |

Is there a reason you copy the whole entire post instead of just what the person/people you're replying to said? It's rather distracting...I hope no offense is taken, I just can't think of anyone else, offhand, who does it. |

Poor old Rillette seems to have been named after a sort of potted meat ... Does Rillette have a coat already? If so, is there anything relevant about it? Has this anything to do with any law in the Torah? Is Hannukkah relevant? Has she taken a vow of poverty? Does she fear that someone will judge her if she buys a new coat? |

so she has a coat? an old coat? a coat suitable for her circumstances? and if she was more religious she would buy a new one? and if she were less religious she would buy a new one? and we need to discover the reason(s)? is the reason for 'more religious' the same as the reason for 'less religious'? The reason (if different for MR and LR please answer for both, MR first)- altrusistic? economic? vanity? for more warmth? to gain a benefit? to avoid losing a benefit? to send out a 'message' of some sort? to fool somebody? to help others in some way? to avoid hurting others? colour relevant? material of coat? price of coat? are her hobbies relevant? her family? her romantic relationships? her pets? her education? her health? could this work with a new winter hat? gloves? a new summer coat? a dress? shoes? a handbag? jewelry? could this work with anything other than an item of clothing? is the reason that she would buy a new coat that she would somehow lose her old one? or wear it out? that her old one would become unsuitable? is the reason (for MR or LR) that she would be spending more time outside? less time? would she buy the same new coat for MR and LR? if not would the difference relate to cost? thickness? style? colour? length? buttons? |

so this puzzle boils down to the statement that, If Rillette had been either more religious or less religious, she would have had more money at a particular time of year, the autumn? with the new winter coat being merely a signifier of having more money at that time? and this is related to the Jewish special days of rosh hashanah and Yom Kippur? having googled those (I regret my ignorance) - it seems that at Rosh Hashanah people are divided into three groups - the righteous, the wicked and the intermediate - is this relevant? and the intermediate have til Yom Kippur to become righteous? while the already righteous are OK, and the wicked are already judged? so Rilette is intermediate? so she now has to use her money in such a way as to become righteous by Yom Kippur? but if she were more or less religious she would already have been in one of the other two groups so would have already been judged - ie it wouldn't be worth using her money to gain righteousness? apologies for the very shallow understanding and analysis of another's reigious festivals! |

No need to apologize to me--I stopped being Jewish when I was 12 so they're not my festivals! |

(But I don't see how that fits for Rilette being "more relgious" and still buying a new coat...) Think about who has to pay the fee at the time| |

Ah...is there a "frequent flyer" program in the Jewish synagogue - eek, sorry; that was little cheeky! Perhaps the faithful attendees get discounts on the reservations? Or get their tickets for free? |

I stopped being Jewish when I was 12; so I'm hardly likely to be offended!! So...if she were less religious, then she wouldn't be in synagogue on the holy days; wouldn't purchase the seat reservation; thereby having the extra money to buy a new coat...right? If she were more religious...hm-m-m... She would be taking an active role in the service - like singing in a choir - no seat required? She would stay home because the less faithful need the seat worse than she does? (Yeah, I know that one's not right!) She would volunteer to stand during the service? She would volunteer to help in another way - such as being an usher/greeter or holding the sacrifice? (Sorry - I am afraid all of my knowledge comes from a Christian vantage point.) |

I had to look at a synagogue's website. If Rilette were more religious then she would already be paying for a regular membership to the synagogue and admission to the holy days services are included in her dues...right? |

Synagogues have a particularly bad way of handling the situation; you have to buy a ticket (often quite expensive) for high holy day services, unless you're a member, in which case tickets are included in your membership dues. If Rillette were more religious, she would be a member & while she would have paid her dues earlier, she wouldn't be especially short of cash in Sept. If she were less religious, she wouldn't be going to temple at all. If you scroll down to the bottom of the page, you will find my new puzzle! And thanks for solving this one, Kaygee! |
