so this puzzle boils down to the statement that, If Rillette had been either more religious or less religious, she would have had more money at a particular time of year, the autumn? with the new winter coat being merely a signifier of having more money at that time? and this is related to the Jewish special days of rosh hashanah and Yom Kippur? having googled those (I regret my ignorance) - it seems that at Rosh Hashanah people are divided into three groups - the righteous, the wicked and the intermediate - is this relevant? and the intermediate have til Yom Kippur to become righteous? while the already righteous are OK, and the wicked are already judged? so Rilette is intermediate? so she now has to use her money in such a way as to become righteous by Yom Kippur? but if she were more or less religious she would already have been in one of the other two groups so would have already been judged - ie it wouldn't be worth using her money to gain righteousness? apologies for the very shallow understanding and analysis of another's reigious festivals! | ||

How about this: If Rillette were more religious, she would miss two or three days of work (1 or 2 days for Rosh Hashanah and 1 for Yom Kippur) - if less religious, then one day of work (Yom Kippur only). So when she skips work she loses money? | ||

If she were more religious...hm-m-m... She would be taking an active role in the service - like singing in a choir - no seat required? She would stay home because the less faithful need the seat worse than she does? (Yeah, I know that one's not right!) She would volunteer to stand during the service? She would volunteer to help in another way - such as being an usher/greeter or holding the sacrifice? (Sorry - I am afraid all of my knowledge comes from a Christian vantage point.) | ||

Synagogues have a particularly bad way of handling the situation; you have to buy a ticket (often quite expensive) for high holy day services, unless you're a member, in which case tickets are included in your membership dues. If Rillette were more religious, she would be a member & while she would have paid her dues earlier, she wouldn't be especially short of cash in Sept.
