She = H/A/F? The murderer = H/A/M? H/A/F? Or was the murderer the banana? (re: Gourami's "Smooth Criminal") |

Oh, and while I'm at it: Title relevant? "The faces of the grooms"...Marriage relevant? Multiple grooms? Was she engaged to multiple men? Or are these grooms such as one might find in a stable? |

She = H/A/F? all of those The murderer = H/A/M? this one H/A/F? Or was the murderer the banana? (re: Gourami's "Smooth Criminal") I am not quite sure I understand this, but no murders were committed by bananas in the course of this puzzle Oh, and while I'm at it: Title relevant? to the usual extent - that is, scarcely at all "The faces of the grooms"... Marriage relevant? no Multiple grooms? no Was she engaged to multiple men? no Or are these grooms such as one might find in a stable? yes, but this is completely irrelevant |

just my attempt at humor, woubit. In Gourami's puzzle, "Smooth Criminal", we are assured that "it turned out the banana did it", i.e. committed the murder. As the events unfolded, it became clear that the banana's DNA was used to substitute for a "suspect's" DNA in a classroom's mock murder investigation; the suspect's DNA matched with the murderer's DNA which the teacher provided; therefore, it was quite clear the banana did it. |

Are the "she" (may we refer to her as Anna?) and the murderer (Jacob, perhaps?) related in any fashion? Married? Siblings? Parent/child? Dating? Friends? Other? Is Third Person (the murder victim) H/A/M? H/A/F? Is there more than one victim? |

Is the murderer a real person? A fictional person? Had she remembered about the murderer, would she have met a sticky end? Did she ever meet the murderer, at any point before the puzzle scenario? Was she asked to remember the name of a murderer in a quiz, or something similar? Is 'the murderer' someone infamous? Or is there a wordplay going on? For instance, a man called Sparrow, whose name suggests he killed Cock Robin? |

So the murderer, who is fictional, and the woman, who isn't? (Or is she?) have never met. If she's not fictional, I can see why, lol. If she is, are they from the same work of fiction? Is he from a: Book? Movie? Play? Opera? Poem? Other? If she is fictional and not from the same work, is the one he is from referenced in the one she is from? (The same list of fictional types applies) |

The murderer acted out the murder of someone in an opera (which is what I meant...I ought to be more specific in woubit puzzles)? Was the "murder victim" H/A/M? H/A/F? Was there more than one? Was the woman intending to see the opera, and forgot to go? |

Did the murderer kill someone who later came back from the dead? Perhaps in a statuesque fashion? no The murderer acted out the murder of someone in an opera the murderer was a character in an opera, yes - however, he does not murder anyone in the course of the drama (which is what I meant...I ought to be more specific in woubit puzzles)? Was the "murder victim" H/A/M? H/A/F? Was there more than one? indeed there was, or so it is alleged; the murderer had a number of victims of both genders, hence previous "FA" and "yope" answers Was the woman intending to see the opera, and forgot to go? no Opera: Don Giovanni? no - not at all a bad shot by both you and Woodworm, but the killing of the Commendatore in Don Giovanni is the result of a duel, and therefore not technically a murder. However... Or (another tack) perhaps she is a singer in the Threepenny Opera? ...well, not exactly, but this is very much in the right forest - almost the right tree Perhaps forgetting the back-story to Mack The Knife (for whatever reason)? the reason is not clear, but this is almost exactly what she did |

So Macheath is the murderer in question? She isn't Lotte Lenya, is she? Is she a famous singer of Mack the Knife? Ella Fitzgerald, maybe? (Ah, so many singers have done this one that it's hard to know where to start.) Does the puzzle strictly require that we find out her identity? Or can we get the gist by lateral means? |

I'm listening to the Live in Berlin 1960 version as I type. Is it this? She forgets the entire lyric at about two minutes in, and apologises to Louis Armstrong for wrecking the song. Hey, it's good enough for jazz. And more key changes than an entire evening of Eurovision. If this is it, do we then need to work out why it was 'just as well'? Did this recording win an award, or such? Or perhaps it was a turning point in her career? The title is Macbeth, isn't it? Some sort of wordplay on Macbeth/Macheath? She doesn't actually call him 'Macbeth', does she? (That would certainly be funny.) |

I'm listening to the Live in Berlin 1960 version as I type. Is it this? indeed it is - well done. ***** SPOILER ***** You can hear the song to which Woodworm refers here. She forgets the entire lyric at about two minutes in, and apologises to Louis Armstrong for wrecking the song. Hey, it's good enough for jazz. And more key changes than an entire evening of Eurovision. well, it was not supposed to be easy - at least, the tune was not. The words, on the other hand... If this is it, do we then need to work out why it was 'just as well'? Did this recording win an award, or such? Or perhaps it was a turning point in her career? Fitzgerald did, as Woodworm says, completely forget the words half way through the song. So brilliantly did she improvise, though, that her performance won a Grammy Award - of which Brecht would entirely have approved had he lived to see it, but he died in 1956. The title is Macbeth, isn't it? Some sort of wordplay on Macbeth/Macheath? She doesn't actually call him 'Macbeth', does she? (That would certainly be funny.) despite obvious similarities in their names, Macheath was not based on Macbeth - but the title that I chose is indeed from Shakespeare's play, for spotting which Woodworm is credited with several bonus marks. My last couple of puzzles have been in the nature of warming up for the 2010 woubit Christmas puzzle, which judging by the skills exhibited by all and sundry will have to be the toughest one yet. Be assured that I will introduce it in recognizable fashion - if I post another between now and the beginning of December, it won't be the Christmas puzzle. |
