Is X just a noun? A noun + descriptive words(e.g. "pink ponies" or "men who eat spaghetti")? Is X a gerund (an -ing noun)? A gerund + descriptive words(e.g. "sightings of ufos," "hangings of criminals")? Does X refer to a person? An object? A situation? An idea/concept? Is the bird a small one (e.g. robin, hummingbird, cardinal, wren)? Or a large one (e.g. flamingo, emu)? Or something in between (e.g. ducks)? | ||

Oh, and is X "classic lateral puzzles"? But as an aside, after reading the puzzle statement, but before seeing the answers that had already been given, I thought of that song about "the bird is the word"--that is certainly one of the most ridiculous songs, and it involves a bird. | ||

Albatross? Yes. Oh, and is X "classic lateral puzzles"? Indeed. ***********Spoiler*************** We all know the puzzle where the guy kills himself after eating albatross, but it always bugged me how ridiculous those circumstances were, even to those accustomed to lateral thinking puzzles. | ||

I agree: the albatross classic is surely the most ridiculous puzzle ever devised. To be honest, if I'd thought of it, I would have thought it much too far-fetched to run it here. But we haven't yet solved Gregory's puzzle (right above this one) which looks even more outrageous. ;-) Nice one, cheers. | ||

Yes, a good idea. But then, I'm not sure it is the most ridiculous puzzle. Just think about the lighthouse keeper who comes home and switches off the light... nobody ever gives any reason why he should do so... he simply must have gone crazy. The setting of the albatross puzzle is very far-fetched, but at least everyone has a reason to do what he does. | ||
