Inspired by the wonderful list of neologisms I have come up with my own.

I am sure that every single one of you have pafimmed at some time in your life, usually when alone and in the privacy of your own home. However, my husband did this on a street a few years ago and I still laugh about it when I think of it. For the record, I don't think that my parents would have ever had the same reason to pafim in public like he did.

What is pafimming?

Did your husband intentionally pafim on the street? Did he literally pafim "on the street"? Or was he simply on the street when he pafimmed?

Is pafimming a solo activity? Is it a bodily function? Does it require any sort of prop?

Is pafimming embarrassing?

Did your husband intentionally pafim on the street? yes Did he literally pafim "on the street"? no Or was he simply on the street when he pafimmed? yes, I was struggling to find the right way to express this

Is pafimming a solo activity? yes, but two people could do it simultaneously Is it a bodily function? the body is necessary, but not in the sense of the toilet or eating etc Does it require any sort of prop? yes

Is pafimming embarrassing? in public quite possibly, but it depends on how robust your sense of humour is

I simply can't do them. I've been trying to do them for fifteen years. (A bit like Nimue puzzles, really.)

Is the prop the thing being looked at? Or is the prop a means of looking, as with a telescope?

It's not one of those 'magic eye' pictures, is it? no

I simply can't do them. I've been trying to do them for fifteen years. I learnt in a shop when the assistant stood behind me and waved into the glass frame covering a large Magic Eye picture. As I looked at her, my eyes sort of crossed and the picture popped out. Now I just relax my eyes and the picture pops. One of my daughter's friends saw things in reverse, i.e. concave rather than convex or vice versa, so perhaps eyes do see them differently
Is the prop the thing being looked at? yope Or is the prop a means of looking, as with a telescope? no

Does pafimming take a few seconds? rarely more than this, although you can repeat your pafimming 30 seconds? a minute? ten minutes?
Is the etymology of the word "pafim" likely to be of any use in solving the puzzle? yes

Hi Lynne!

does this involve the focus of the eyes changing? during the action? before? after?
does it involve the eyeballs moving? up? down? left? right? going round?
does it involve the pupil changing size?
does it involve the eyelids moving?

would a child be more likely to do it than an adult? would they enjoy it? be less embarrassed? is it done in response to another action? to something someone says? to a sound of some sort? to something one sees?

Hi Lynne! hey, good to see you after so long!

does this involve the focus of the eyes changing? not specifically during the action? before? after?
does it involve the eyeballs moving? up? down? left? right? going round? it could do any or all of these, but that varies from person to person
does it involve the pupil changing size? no
does it involve the eyelids moving? they often do, yes

would a child be more likely to do it than an adult? you would think so, but you haven't met my husband.... would they enjoy it? yes be less embarrassed? yes is it done in response to another action? no, it's complete in and of itself to something someone says? no to a sound of some sort? no to something one sees? yes

I do lurk around a lot... hope all is well with you and yours..

you said your parents would have not had the same reason to do this as he did - is that because they would not have seen what he saw? would not have reacted as he did? is this simply a way of saying that this reason for the action only arose recently?

is it done in response to seeing someone perform an action? does it involve copying someone? something? is it a response in appreciation of seeing something? in disgust? in fear? is it meant to be funny?

is it to look at something in a particular way? or with a particular intention? or to look at some one? is the action meant to convey a message? is it a response that usually we suppress? is it considered impolite? insulting? (can't imagine the rev being insulting though..)

************* SPOILER ******************

To pafim is Pulling A Face In (the) Mirror. I'm sure we've all done it, admit it!

My husband and I were walking along a street when I noticed him pulling faces right up at an office building that was entirely made of mirror glass (which is why my parents were unlikely to ever encounter such a type of building back in their day). I told him that it was probably two way mirror glass and a whole office could see him!

So, when you're walking through an airport children, don't pull faces in the mirror. The nice customs and passport control bods are probably laughing their heads off

Thank you Balin - you worked hard on it as usual which is always appreciated.
Could this be added to The Neologistic Listic?

I tend to Pafim while shaving . Does this count as it's in the comfort of my own home?

Lynne - listic updated.

And Peter - I would think that your shaving antics would count as pafimming, but I'm not an expert on it.

Technically, parfimming is the spontaneous and inane pulling of faces - my husband says that as a child he would try to beat his own reflection when parfimming (not that he knew the word back then, but I digress)

Nevertheless shaving is an excellent time to perfect your parfim. After all, ladies often pafim when applying lipstick. The raised eyebrows are technically unnecessary, but the application of lipstick to the lips has an effect on the eyebrows, and the application of eyeshadow causes the lips to purse.

Um, when did that rogue 'R' appear in pafim? Language is evolving already - due to typoes (sic)

And one day they will all take off into space and leave us a message that says, "So long, and thanks for all the fish" (even though we can't understand it because we think it is a "surprisingly sophisticated attempt to do a double-backwards-somersault through a hoop whilst whistling the 'Star Spangled Banner'" [H2G2]) while laughing hysterically at how stupid we are,

Also... "For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much—the wheel, New York, wars and so on—whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man—for precisely the same reasons." (Adams, H2G2)
