An article by a designer of cattle handling systems made me realize why, and how to work around it. |

Did the "why", and the "how to work around it", relate to the way she designed certain cattle handling equipment? to animal behavior in general? or did it relate to the human mind? and/or how she manages a certain aspect of her autism? |

Is it related to any form of communication? Talking? Writing? Giving speeches? Non-verbal communication? Communicating on the internet? Phone calls? Do you have the same problem? This puzzle is quite a coincidence as I'm currently re-reading Oliver Sacks's books, and I find the chapter about Grandin fascinating. |

did what she wrote make you realise why you don't remember people's names? does her solution help you remember the names? or does it help you get by without remembering their names? |

just speaking from personal experience - is it to do with not actually listening to the name and taking it in when introduced? is it a technique she learned from the cattle? or is it something that helps her with cattle? |

just speaking from personal experience - is it to do with not actually listening to the name and taking it in when introduced? No, even if I listen and make an effort, it's often gone within 5 minutes. is it a technique she learned from the cattle? or is it something that helps her with cattle? No to both - see Biograd's first post above. |

is the reason you don't remember people's names common to many people? when you know what it is, is it a kickself moment? is it because there is no obvious way of relating the name to the person? do you try to remember the names by associating them with the person in a visual way? |

is the reason you don't remember people's names common to many people? I don't know. when you know what it is, is it a kickself moment? No. is it because there is no obvious way of relating the name to the person? Indeed. do you try to remember the names by associating them with the person in a visual way? Yes! ***SPOILER*** I read an article by Temple Grandin on autism, where she mentioned that concepts and words that could not be visualized, had no meaning to her. If I think of a name, I can visualize the person fine (I'm a very visual thinker, and don't usually think in words unless I think about speaking or writing something). But if I visualize a person, it does not automatically connect back to the name - because the name has no meaning in my brain except to bring forth the visualization of the person. But if I visualize the person with something that connectes back to the name, I'll remember it. So now my colleague Micke has a Mickey Mouse hat on him in my mind, and my other colleague Jens is a piece of Jensen brand network equipment, and I don't forget their names. I remember nicknames and unusual names fine, but otherwise I can draw a blank regarding the real name of people I've known for years. Thanks for playing! |
