He = H/A/M? Yes = Balin? No True story? No FYOI? Only the musing that is the puzzle statement FSEI? But most of the story is this LTPF list of centuries/decades? Two decades are relevant - 1880s and 1980s. LTPF list of continents/countries? An unknown fictional place on Earth, probably in the US |

I was miles off. I misread the date of the original poem and thought it might be the Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Iron Maiden had a song on their Powerslave album based on the poem. 14 minutes long it was. Is this a well known 80's pop hit? By a british band? US Band? other? british singer? US singer? other? I suppose I better eliminate something obvious ... Are REM relevant? (of course they ARE relevant but I mean in the context of this puzzle ;) |

so in the original poem Casey struck out and presumably his team didn't win? Right. was the second poem written about the same era? About 15-20 years later, if I can remember by the same poet? No did Casey's team win? Yes! That's all you need to know for the poem. Now, the song. (Googlepedia is legal.) ps not an expert in Americana, but there was a fabulous treatment of the poem in MAD magazine in the 50s or 60s I've seen a few good parodies - don't think I've seen that one though. I'll have to check it out. |

Since we're almost there I will RECAP: The "he" is from a baseball song from the 1980s. The song mentions him being around during the events of the poem "Casey at the Bat," but I wonder if "he" stayed for the sequel in which Casey hits a home run. All that's left is the song. |

The only song that is coming to mind is "Centerfield"...? ...and that's the right one. **********SPOILER********** John Fogerty's song "Centerfield" contains the lyrics: Well I spent some time in the Mudville nine Watching it from the bench You know I took some lumps When the Mighty Casey struck out Naturally, I am wondering whether the song's narrator stuck around for the sequel ("Casey's Revenge," by either James Wilson or Grantland Rice), in which Casey hits a game-winning home run. Nice work everyone (Shez, Peter, Kaygee, et cetera). |
