It was inconvenient to say the least. However, they found an ingenious way to overcome it...and in the end, they were quite right.

I hate to ask this, but does this have to do with our family, as so many of you puzzles do? No, neither of the adults or the child (who's now an adult) are relations of ours or personal friends. OTWT, Tortiesibling. Of course, it depends on your definition of "have to do with our family". =P

Anything to do with the child developing a bosom?

If so, did they solve the problem by bandaging it up to make it flat? or getting a mastectomy?

Anything to do with the child developing a bosom? well, you already asked this, slightly more indelicately, on FB and I said yes, so you know it is =P...in fact, "developing a bosom" was her wording.

If so, did they solve the problem by bandaging it up to make it flat? This, but there's more to it.
or getting a mastectomy? No.

Were they trying to make her look like a boy?

Or does this have to do with something like archery, where a woman's chest could get in the way of a good draw of the bow?

Were they trying to make her look like a boy? No, they just wanted her to look younger. Why, though?

Or does this have to do with something like archery, where a woman's chest could get in the way of a good draw of the bow? Very good thought, but entirely on the wrong track, lol. Remember, this child grew up to be a world-famous person we both know about...do you know any world-famous archers? =P

someone who was famous for being a little girl? not exactly...she became considerably more famous for performances as an adult, although at that point, her 'act' was being a little girl, yes, which is why she had to bind her bosom. Unfortunately, having "grown up", she didn't want to hide it...so...

Who are "they"?
How did "they" get her to agree to hide her flourishing figure?
Who is she and what is she famous for?

for example Shirley Temple? Not Shirley Temple, although now you've got into the right forest...

going to guess actresses now... good plan

Judy Garland? Drew Barrymore? too early and too late, respectively, though Judy's closer

I'm guessing that "they" are her parents?
and maybe bribed her with something? Yes, and DOYD of "bribe"...

RECAP with HINTS:

In a country as yet to be determined, in a year as yet to be determined, a twelve year old child who would grow up to become a world-famous actress caused her parents distress by entering puberty and being proud of her new "bosom", antithesis to the little-girl image they had so carefully cultivated for their act. They told her if she bound up her bosom, it would help something happen.

To find out: Who is she?
When was this?
Where was this?
What did her parents tell her would happen? (hint: time period is VERY relevant)
And what is she most famous for?

(Since no one seems to be exploring the relevance of the title: it's the beginning of a song: "Don't Put Your Daughter On The Stage". This is relevant, but not hugely relevant.

film? her fame later came from this television? stage? she was in vaudeville, and theatre, too, but became arguably most famous for her film career later

was her appeal that she seemed so accomplished for one so young? and if the public realised she had breasts they would realise she was much older? her "gimmick" in those days was to be the little girl, so her developing a bosom (as she put it) was a problem.

or was she playing a boy? no, see above

was she famous for playing a particular role? in the 60's, she had two film roles that she's been especially famous for, and she's still a popular actress. She's had several roles in the theatre, as well.

did her parents tell her that her career would be over? no, they told her that "if she strapped down her bust" it would help something. What?

Hmm, I'm confused now. Did they really think her strapping down her bust would help them win the war? Or did they just tell her? lol, they just told her that to earn her compliance on the issue. As she told her audience, "they said that about EVERYTHING in those days." Did she believe it? at the time, yes, and as she was relating the story, she said "And it worked, didn't it? We DID win, didn't we?"

You said "in the end, they were quite right" - did anything relevant happen that was caused by her strapping down her bust? not *really* caused by it, but see above, lol.

Are the roles you're thinking of Mary Poppins and My Fair Lady?

Are the roles you're thinking of Mary Poppins and My Fair Lady? Two out of three...what was her other most famous film in that time period, besides Mary Poppins?

Is it The Americanization of Emily? you know what, I've never heard of this one!! lol! The Sound of Music? this is it!!!

***SPOILER***
At a concert in Los Angeles, CA in 1989 (I found links on YouTube, just look for "Julie Andrews concert", the one where she's wearing a black and white shirt) Dame Julie Andrews told a story about her childhood. It seems that as she grew up during the second World War, it was common to tell children to do things "to help win the war". Well, her mother and stepfather used that phrase on her to get her to hide her blossoming figure without wounding her 12-year-old dignity.

Of course, it must have helped, as she quipped, because the Allies DID win the war, didn't they? *grin*

One of Dame Julie's most famous films, "The Sound of Music", is not at all famous in the location where it's set: Austria. This seemed odd to me until I realized...the story's about the Nazi occupation of Austria, well, they're not really going to want to revisit that now, are they? (It's apparently not popular in Germany either, likely for the same reason). Salzburg, Austria, would seem to be the exception...but they mostly do tourist tours and such things.

"My Fair Lady", her most famous Broadway role, was made into a film, but Julie was passed over for the film role in favour of another actress. When she was accepting the awards for her role in Mary Poppins, then, she had a moment of sweet revenge as she thanked the director of "My Fair Lady" for making this moment possible.

And now you all know the rest of the story! =P
