Eva and Jack were talking on the phone and during the course of conversation, Eva asked Jack a question. He answered, but found that minutes after the call ended, his answer had come to mean the exact opposite of what he’d meant. He hadn’t lied or intended to mislead Eva at all. What’s going on? |

No Sooner than expected (or actually)? No Those last ones took some thinking, not sure I entirely understood the "seem" part of it. |

Is he serious in his answer? Or is he joking? Does he use an idiom? Do they live in different countries? Jack's answer indicate that he will come to see Mary, but not soon, correct? Is this his intended meaning? Or is this the unintended, opposite meaning? Is the unintended meaning that he will never come? |

Was it some tongue-in-cheek answer like "At your funeral"? Or did he state in general "When X Happens"? And he didn't think X would happen for a while (or ever) and then it did? (Like if this happened in the '60s and he said "I'll see you when they put a man on the moon" meaning never, and then later that day, NASA announced that they WOULD put a man on the moon soon) |

Redwine Is he serious in his answer? No Or is he joking? Yes Does he use an idiom? No Do they live in different countries? Yes, though far from each other works just as well. Jack's answer indicate that he will come to see Mary *coughEVAcough*, but not soon, correct? Yes Is this his intended meaning? YES Or is this the unintended, opposite meaning? No Is the unintended meaning that he will never come? No Shez does he say he'll see her before something happens and then the thing happens so that can't be true? No, but this is getting in the right direction Gregoryuconn Was it some tongue-in-cheek answer like "At your funeral"? Yes...but not that one Or did he state in general "When X Happens"? YES And he didn't think X would happen for a while (or ever) and then it did? YES! (Like if this happened in the '60s and he said "I'll see you when they put a man on the moon" meaning never, and then later that day, NASA announced that they WOULD put a man on the moon soon) Absolutely the right line of thinking, not these specifics… Some good progress here! ************ SPOILER ************ Below is the text of the news story on this one: Florida man wins lottery, must visit mom Smart-aleck remark ends in $4 million win — and a trip to see her (Todd Wright, NBCMIAMI.com, 3/16/2011) MIAMI — When Johan Fourie's mom asked him on Sunday when he was going to come visit her, his answer was as funny as it was seemingly unrealistic. "When I win the lottery," Fourie said. Moments later, Fourie checked his Florida Lotto ticket and saw that he had actually won the $4 million jackpot. (Ves adds: Florida Lotto holds one of its weekly drawings late Saturday evening, with many checking their tickets in the Sunday morning paper.) "I had no idea I would be calling her back later that day to tell her I was on my way!" he said Wednesday. For 12 years, the 62-year-old Hollywood man had played the same numbers — 9, 10, 23, 37, 38 — religiously every week. His diligence finally paid off in a big way. Fourie chose to take the lump sum payment of more than $2.3 million. Maybe mom will get a really nice dinner with her visit. Where does his Mom live that he rarely sees her? No clue. Does Johan realize he might have been able to see his Mom more often if he wasn’t spending $100 a year on lotto tickets? No clue. Will everyone who worked on this puzzle think twice before giving a smart-aleck answer? Maybe. Or maybe they will buy a lotto ticket and then see if this response will work twice. *wink*} Well played all! Not a bad first puzzle back and I’m remembering how addictive playing these can be! Balin, feel free to post the link if you like. |

In 1964, Giants manager Alvin Dark remarked "There will be a man on the moon before Gaylord Perry hits a home run". At 1:40 PM PDT on July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 landed on the moon. Just a few minutes later, Gaylord Perry hit his first major league home run. Go figure! |

Roughly 17. We don't know exactly, but it was a 2 hour 20 minute game that started at 1:00 PM PDT and he hit it in the bottom of the third inning, so it was probably around 1:45-2:00 PM. But we don't know exactly when. |
