Are the fires an intended consequence of whatever he's doing? an unintended consequence? a method of doing whatever he's doing? Does his Eureka moment come as a direct result of the fire(s)? or something else? Is any one of the fires more relevant than the others toward the Eureka moment? If so, the last one? Is he a scientist? Is his profession relevant? Are these real fires? or fictional ones (like in a game or video game)? |

Is he present at the fires? Did he start one or all of the fires? Is it relevant who started the fires? Were they accidental fires? His profession within "Yopeish" science: Does he play a scientist on TV? Would he call himself a scientist? Is the time period important? (I guess I'm asking, does "scientist" as a profession exist in the time period in which he lives?) Can we name him? How about Fargo? (Hey, YOU brought up Eureka...) Speaking of, Eureka as in "Aha, I have learned/realized something"? Eureka as one of the many towns named Eureka? Eureka as in the line of vacuums? ;) |

Based on true story? Fictional? Legend? Urban legend? From your imagination? From someone else’s? We have houses and objects and chemicals catching fire… Is the point of origin of the fires relevant? Are they starting in the homes? Or are the homes just impacted? Are the chemicals starting the fires? By themselves? Through their interaction with something else? With intervention from someone else? Are the fires occurring because of natural causes? Lightning? Spontaneous combustion due to high temp? Some interaction of sunlight and a lens? The “yesish” intersection of the fires and his job: I think we established he is NOT a firefighter. Is this correct? Is he investigating the fires? Is he reporting on the fires? Is he involved with cleaning up after the fires? Does he own the property (properties) impacted? Work there? Is he mayor, police chief, or some other role of authority that makes him “responsible” for dealing with the fires? Does he know who/what is starting the fires? |

Did he become politician? Or did he move to another job connected with projecting regulations? no to both HINT: His realisation and his job change led to something that is nowadays known as the X-Y-hypothesis. Y is his last name, X is someone else's last name. |

Did his hypothesis (the "X-Y-hypothesis") actually relate to or explain the phenomenon of people misreading labels or other text? or did he just give up on trying to educate people about fire safety, and therefore do something else entirely? Is this hypothesis "serious", in the sense that it could be tested in experiments? or is it more humorous, like Murphy's Law? (I know that one was actually intended to be serious originally, but it seems that has gone by the wayside now) Does his area of research pertain to language? to cognitive science? to sociology? |

This puzzle may refer to the so-called "Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis." This is basically a conjecture that the structure of language constrains the way its speakers may conceptualize their world-view. Whorf was an 'amateur' linguist in that had no formal academic recognition in the field. He was a Chemical Engineer working for an insurance company as a fire inspector and had been a student of Sapir. The story goes, that upon inspecting a chemical plant, Whorf observed that the plant had two storage rooms for gasoline barrels: one for full barrels and one for empty barrels. He noticed that while no employees smoked cigarettes in the room of full barrels, many smoked in the room of empty barrels. Smoking in the empty barrel room was more dangerous due to the inflammable vapors that existed in the barrels. A moment of thought would have revealed this to the workmen, so he conjectured that the use of the word 'empty' in connection with the barrels had led the workers to subtly perceive the empty barrels to be less dangerous than the full ones. There is much interesting information available on the internets via a search of the term: Sapir-Whorf. |

Exactly! (: And another part of the story is that people had problems understanding that "inflammable" is the same thing as "flammable" sind "in" is usually used to indicate the contrary of something. Nice work, guys! |

Yes, that was the ********SPOILER********. Speaking of spoilers, Sapir, we usually don't spell the word out until the puzzle is solved because otherwise it might automatically be moved to the "solved puzzles" section. We use $poyler or something like that instead (: |
