When someone in the audience tried to insult the visiting lecturer, the visiting lecturer turned the attempted insult into a compliment. How come? |

This sounds vagely familiar, I think I've heard a similar puzzle before. However, I don't remember the answer. Does this happen as a university? the visiting lecturer: H/A/M? F? Is the visiting lecturer a professor/researcher from another university? a scientist? a politician? a famous person? the "someone": H/A/M? F? a student? a professor? researcher? |

Did Cindy say something generally insulting (like "You're an idiot")? Something that insulted Marco's views ("You'd have to be an idiot to believe that)? Or something that just disagreed with the views in a way that wasn't entirely name-calling (like "I don't know how anyone could think such a thing.") |

Did she? Could this have happened if Marco hadn't been a visiting lecturer but one who is always there? Did Cindy hear him for the first time? Is anything else about Marco relevant? Age? Race? RECAP & HINT: Add this to the puzzle description: Cindy's intended ins ultimplied that Marco was a something like a "wiseguy" & he took it literally--as a compliment. Think of another word she might have used. She didn't use that word but finding it would make you ORT (on the right track.) |

This (or your next guess) is the relevant expression she might have used. She didn't use it, but she said something that implied he was a glib know-it-all, It's a common criticism, What is it? or know-all? See previous answer. clever clogs? No, I never even heard that delightful expression before. Thanks for introducing me to it!! |
