You don't have to be an American to identify this passive scrund about the US presidency. (A passive scrund is a scrund you've never thought about but that you realize you had when you're surprised to learn that it's false.) |

Presidential families? How they travel? How they become president? Some seal/title/protocol about being president? The White house? The Oval office? President of the United States? Is the scrund about whether the president legally counts as a government employee? with work contract? about his salary? about job benefits for him and his family (like health insurance, free accomodation, free travel within the country) Relevant that he is on duty 24 hours, 7 days? Something the US president is not allowed to do while being in office? (like: having a second job? having other sources of income? accepting medals, awards, gifts from foreign countries?) Did you think that a president would never return to his previous job after his term has ended? (but James Carter and Bill Clinton did?) |

Something about the Presidential Curse afflicting all presidents elected in a year ending with 0? (For quite a long time, all presidents elected in such a year were assassinated. There was an attempt on Reagan, and Bush Jr....Well, I don't think an attempt was made on him, but he certainly didn't have the best time in office, to say the least. Here's what I'm talking about.} The Presidential Curse |

Well, I take that back. Not *all* were assassinated. It's past 10:30 and my brain got fuzzy. But they did die in office, whether from assassination or another cause. Not always in the first term, either...so the "curse" apparently predicted re-election for some... |

There was an assassination attempt on Bush. Actually, there was more than one. But there has been at lest one attempt on every president since Nixon, with the exception of Obama, but he's not done yet, and several plots have been foiled by the FBI. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_presidential_assassination_attempts_and_plots#George_W._Bush for more info. |

*does some fact checking* Looks like four presidents were assassinated in office (which equals about 9%). Relevant? Another four presidents died in office. Relevant? All in all, this would add up to a bit more than 18% who died in office which probably makes it one of the most dangerous jobs. Relevant? |

Regardless of whether you did, I bet you'll be surprised to hear that it's US President! Of course, most people in this job are fairly old men (a group with a high death rate), but they're also privileged white men. Check out my new puzzle! |

Well, I guess the real question is how the death rate for people in this job compares with that of controls (matched for age & sex, etc.) who are not in that job. Being Pope probably does not increase one's risk of death the way being US President does (although the sample is so small that this may bee more an oddity than a real risk} |
