A real dead bad guy? a fictional one? Osama bin Laden? If not, did he live in [LTPF list of centuries]? |

Was it about the spelling? The pronunciation? Did you think it was his full name? Did you think that "bin Laden" is like a Western last name (and not a patronymic, since bin/ben/ibn... usually mean "son of")? |

Osama? Did you think it was spelled differently? Surely you didn't think it was "Obama"? |

I think they're both correct spellings - Wikipedia has it with an O. And that was a lucky shot. Good puzzle! |

Yeah but wiki's info is right about 60% of the time though. So I'm not completely sure where the O came from...but yeah. |

maybe it's just because they don't use the same alphabet as us? |

Shez, it is. The spelling variations come from converting it into our alphabet...so I'm not sure there is a "correct" spelling, just ones that are favored by certain news outlets. |

Per Wikipedia (which has dubious cred, but I've seen this same discussion on other sites with links and quotes from numerous world news orgs): There is no universally accepted standard for transliterating Arabic words and Arabic names into English;[9] bin Laden's name was most frequently rendered "Osama bin Laden". The FBI and CIA, as well as other U.S. governmental agencies, have used either "Usama bin Laden" or "Usama bin Ladin", both of which may be abbreviated as "UBL". Less common renderings include "Ussamah Bin Ladin" and "Oussama Ben Laden" in the French-language media. Other spellings include "Binladen" or, as used by his family in the West, "Binladin". The spellings with o and e come from a Persian-influenced pronunciation also used in Afghanistan, where bin Laden spent many years. |

I kinds of like "Oussama". I guess in French that might sound the same...maybe...kinda... |
