Barton, Colleen, Kayla, Perkins, and Yorick, none of whom know each other, are all participating in a different activity one day. By chance, they all say the exact same thing at the exact same time. What are they doing, and what do they say?

All human?
All adult?
All alive?

Based on a true story?
From your imagination?
From someone else's imagination?

Are they all in the same general location?
Are they all in the same specific location (like at school or in the same park)?

Was what they said related to what they each were doing?
Or to some outside event?
(like finding out the President had been killed etc.)

Time period relevant?
Country?

Jumping in...

Is Perkins an archaeologist? paleontologist? Does he work in a museum? Are dinosaurs relevant?

Colleen's board game -- Life? Clue? Sorry? Is it a game that mimics (or purports to, anyway) a real-world situation (like Life or Clue)? or is abstract or makes no claims at being a real-world "simulation" (like Sorry, checkers, or backgammon)? Is it a word-based game (like Scattergories or Scrabble)?

Kayla's yesish board game -- the yesish board = tiles (like in Settlers of Catan or Carcassone)? paper? Is it a mancala-style game?
Does the board-ish have a usual/set set-up, or can it change depending on the game that's being played? Is the board-ish "constructed" before play begins (for example, Catan)? while play is ongoing (for example, Carcassone)?

Barton -- Scavenger hunt relevant?

Yorick -- Does his work bring him in contact with the general public on a regular basis? Is he a scientist? doctor? in business? Does he work in law?

Amazing work, Kalira! NOW we're getting somewhere!

SO...Barton is "running" the Bingo game, calling out the letter/number combinations.

Colleen is playing chess.
Is she playing long distance, perhaps via phone?
(Trying to think of why she would need to be calling her moves (or someone else's) out loud...)

Kayla is playing Battleship and I'm guessing called out her move. Yes?

Perkins is an archeologist.
Is he answering someone's question about where work is happening?
Where something was found?

And now we just have Yorick...
He is working and does not work:
In an office
A school
outdoors
from home
in retail
at a restaurant
for the government
in entertainment
a scientist
doctor
in business
in law

His work Yope-ishly brings him into contact with the public.

This handy recap provided by she that can't remember what we'd already determined.

Amazing work, Kalira! NOW we're getting somewhere!

SO...Barton is "running" the Bingo game, calling out the letter/number combinations. YES - he is a bingo caller.

Colleen is playing chess. Yes
Is she playing long distance, perhaps via phone? No
(Trying to think of why she would need to be calling her moves (or someone else's) out loud...) It's not relevant why; it's only relevant that she's calling her moves out loud. Let's just say that she's calling them to someone who's writing them down.

Kayla is playing Battleship and I'm guessing called out her move. Yes? Yes

Perkins is an archeologist. Paleontologist
Is he answering someone's question about where work is happening? Yope
Where something was found? Well, where they're looking.

And now we just have Yorick...
He is working and does not work:
In an office
A school
outdoors
from home
in retail
at a restaurant
for the government
in entertainment
a scientist

His work Yope-ishly brings him into contact with the public. All correct. It brings him into contact with a certain part of the public regularly, but never with others.

This handy recap provided by she that can't remember what we'd already determined. Well, she did a pretty good job of it -- nice recap!

Hmm this should now be obvious but isn't .

Are the term B4 and the word Before relevant?

Sorry posted before I'd finished.

Are bingo calls like "Legs 11" or "Two Little Ducks" relevant?

Yay for lateral leaps achieved!

If it's not B4/before, it has to be something else between B1 and B8... nothing else matches up between bingo cards and chess notation.

Is the thing they say in common the only thing each of them says at that time? or are any of the things said in common a part of a longer sentence/speech (like "Rapunzel's going to be four steps behind the flying saucer when it lands for a spaghetti dinner in NW DC" -- yes, obviously not that)?

Are the term B4 and the word Before relevant? Not quite, but you can't get more OTRT than this!}

Are bingo calls like "Legs 11" or "Two Little Ducks" relevant? Not these -- I've never heard those before

If it's not B4/before, it has to be something else between B1 and B8... nothing else matches up between bingo cards and chess notation. Right

Is the thing they say in common the only thing each of them says at that time? Yes, for Barton, Kayla, and Perkins. Colleen says the "common thing" and one other letter (she's calling out her move, but you knew that already). or are any of the things said in common a part of a longer sentence/speech (like "Rapunzel's going to be four steps behind the flying saucer when it lands for a spaghetti dinner in NW DC" -- yes, obviously not that)? This is true for Yorick

White collar?
Blue collar?
Academic?
Sales?

Is his job unusual?

The certain part of the public:
Predominately of one gender?
Of a similar age as each other?
All of a similar class?
Those geographically close?
People in the same profession as Yorick?
People in the same profession as each other?

Does he work for craft services?

The certain part of the public:

"Be one" in the sense of "turn into one"? (like for example, "Don't just be LIKE a successful businessman, BE ONE!")

in the sense of "harmonize"? (as in "Be one with nature")

Or does the "one" only make sense in context? (like "Always be one step ahead of the competition")

"Be one" in the sense of "turn into one"? (like for example, "Don't just be LIKE a successful businessman, BE ONE!") Not exactly

in the sense of "harmonize"? (as in "Be one with nature") Yes, slight -ish

Or does the "one" only make sense in context? (like "Always be one step ahead of the competition") See below

is Yorick a priest or rabbi or other religious leader? YES -- which means I can finally say

**********SPOILER**********

All five people say "B1" (or "Be one").

Barton is a bingo caller. He has just pulled out ball B1 and is calling it out.

Colleen is playing chess. She has just moved a piece to square b1 and is calling out her move.

Kayla is playing Battleship. She "fires a shot" at square B1.

Perkins is a paleontologist on a dig. The dig site has been divided into a grid, and he calls out "B1" to start the search in that area.

Yorick is an Eastern spiritual guru, imploring his followers to "Be one" with the universe.

Thanks everyone for working on this puzzle -- I had no idea when I started it if it would go well or flop. One more puzzle from me before I head off.
