Many times one player on a sports team will get more playing time due to an injury to a teammate. However, Tim got less playing time because of an injury to his teammate. Why? |

Is the particular sport relevant? Baseball? Football? Soccer? Basketball? Lacrosse? Tennis? Golf? Hockey? Tim - H? A? M? Wild thought - was the teammate his partner (like in doubles tennis)? And because his teammate was hurt, they couldn't compete in doubles? |

Was it less time in one particular competition? Or was he not able to compete as many times, or against as many other teams, as he would have otherwise? |

Is the particular sport relevant? Yes Baseball? This, though I suppose softball would work too Football? Soccer? Basketball? Lacrosse? Tennis? Golf? Hockey? Tim - H? A? M? Yes to all Wild thought - was the teammate his partner (like in doubles tennis)? And because his teammate was hurt, they couldn't compete in doubles? No, good thought though Was it less time in one particular competition? See below Or was he not able to compete as many times, or against as many other teams, as he would have otherwise? He wasn't able to play in as many games as he otherwise would have. Let's put it that way. |

His position relevant? Yes If so, P? C? 1B? 2B? 3B? SS? LF? CF? RF? None of these His teammate's position relevant? If so, [LTPF list of baseball positions]? 2B-ish. The 2B is irr, but the "ish" matters. |

Is Tim a pinch-hitter? A pinch-runner? Did he get less playing time in one game? Over a long period of time? |

Just to confirm - Tim is a player? Not a coach or some other team employee? |

Is Tim a pinch-hitter? A pinch-runner? Neither of these. Think basic. Did he get less playing time in one game? Over a long period of time? I'd say over about a month. The exact length is irr. Just to confirm - Tim is a player? Yes Not a coach or some other team employee? Correct |

Did the injury affect JUST Tim or the whole team? Did the injury prevent them from playing in a tournament or playoff? |

Did Tim cause the injury? and was suspended? Was he a relative of the teammate and had to take care of him or her? Animals relevant? No to all of Emeraldink's questions Did the injury affect JUST Tim or the whole team? It affected Tim only, although it did affect one other player in a different way, I suppose. Did the injury prevent them from playing in a tournament or playoff? No |

If Noel is right, was the player able to hit but not field because of his injury? So that player DHed instead of Tim? |

Is Tim a designated hitter? Yes, see below If Noel is right, was the player able to hit but not field because of his injury? So that player DHed instead of Tim? Yes, and that is the *****SPOILER****** Tim is Tim Martin, the DH for UConn baseball. LJ Mazilli, our normal second baseman, was injured around the beginning of the season (I'm not sure if it was at the beginning or shortly thereafter, as we were on the road for a month or so before coming home due to weirdness of the college baseball schedule starting when there is still snow on the ground in Storrs). LJ (son of ex-Yankee player and coach Lee Mazilli) could hit but not play the field so he was forced to DH. Tim Martin is a second baseman by nature but is a very poor fielder so typically he does not play the field. So, for most of our first few home games, Mazilli DH'ed, Tom Verdi played second, and Martin didn't play. Good job everyone, especially Noel and Balin for the final push. Check out my next puzzle, also a UConn one. |
